i know most of you guys dont like the d series but its all i can afford since mine is giving me engine problems ive read about d16zc, d16z6, and also d15b which is vtec but needs a vtec controller? also a dual cam d16zc? are there any others or which one of these is the best one to put in i have the regular lx engine now and it is quite peppy but im looking to go vtec any info is greatly appreciated

Re: wich is the best d series motor

Best And D series dont go together.
Least embarssing is probbly better wording. In that case the z6 I've found to be better as its almost same as the y8 powerwise but better bottom end Y8 head is better.

the ZC you spoke of is an older motor and can not leaglly be swaped into your car you'd also need to do wiring and if you need a tranny also you'd be screwed it has a cable your hydro.

I'm not sure where you got the vtec controller needed idea. You only need one if your a half asser wiring up to a obd1 p28 ecu negates that. P28s are great for chipping also.

Re: wich is the best d series motor

i think there is such a thing as a best D series motor...just count out everything else besides D series motors and pick out which one is best...get a z6 or y8

Re: wich is the best d series motor

d15b,d16z6,d16y8 thats about it. and i think the z6 head is better flowing just that the y8 has a smaller combustion chamber and the intake ports are offset for better fuel effiecency.

Re: wich is the best d series motor

There is no dohc z6, there's a dohc ZC (non-vtec).
For the Y8, you'll do a little wiring but nothing too bad (mostly using a mix of stock parts with a few wiring change-overs). Your stock tranny will bolt up with no problems at all, it will bolt up to any d-series engine. There are no problems with the d15b vtec, it's just not as common of an engine as the Z6 or Y8.

The ACT kits are very good from what I've heard, I have an exedy stage 1 (slightly better than stock) clutch though so I can't speak from experience(don't think they make one for a d series). The only complaints I've ever heard with ACT is the price (it's a little higher than others). I'd also go with a lighter flywheel if you don't have one already. That'll make a huge impact on acceleration(did for me at least, going from the stock to exedy flywheel).

to a certain extent when it comes to flywheels and crankshaft pulley. the flywheel and crankshaft pulley are also there to help balance the engine internals. the lighter the less balance and u start screwing up bearings and oilpumps. thats y a harmonic dampner is better than a lighwheight pulley
