95 Civic DX bought with no start

I'm kind of stumped here. Bought a 95 Civic DX hatch for our son and the lady we got it from said it just died driving one day. Cranks fine, but timing belt had jumped. Replaced timing belt and head gasket and put everything back together. Took a compression check and it's at 170 on all 4 cylinders. I checked spark through the wire and there's spark, put new plugs in. Cracked the fuel line by the filter and there's fuel and plenty of pressure. Car offered to fire for a brief second with old plugs in, but now I get crank, with no attempt to start.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Kirk

no check engine lights?

does it look like its a strong spark? do you know how to check the electrical components in the dizzy and plug wires with a voltage meter? check all grounds. thermostat housing, valve cover, tranny. also, check all the underdash and underhood fuses and relays. there are a few that go directly to the dizzy and ignition components.

No bent valves. Cleaned them all up when the head was off. They all sealed good.

Re: Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

Looks like everything's firing right. Put it at TDC and took the cap off and it's pointing right at the #1. Took all 4 plugs out and they are wet. Put the old plugs in and cranked it, still no start. Pulled those back out and they are wet again (gas). Left them out to dry everything out a bit. Jumped the data link under the glove box and got a code 51. Can't find what the 51 code means though.

Re: Re: Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

5 long and one quick one. Then it repeats itself again, 5 long with one wuick. I'm going to try and re time it tomorrow. Checked the timing marks and they don't line up where it should. The single mark on the pully is at about 2 ' o clock when it should be at 12. Something wasn't in the right spot when we put the belt on I guess. It must be firing on the exhaust instead of compression stroke.

We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Later

Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

i dont ever recall there being a cel 51 for the obd1 civics.

either your reading it wrong or your ecu is sending it incorrectly. if you are recieving a code that does not exist, the ecu is no good. it also may explain why your engine is not firing up.

also, have you checked the injectors? you are getting fuel to the cylinders, but, is the injectors working correctly to bring the right amount of fuel in the combustion chamber?

Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

sounds like u'r ignition timing is advanced. i had the same problem before. try retarding the timing by turning the distributor clockwise (when looking at it from the passenger side). if u had a good compression check, then the t-belt is on right and the cam and crank r timed right.

Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

By any wild chance... You have checked the Distributor Rotator?

And there isn't a Code 51 from what I can tell... Perhaps the ECU is bad?

I double and triple checked the code. 5 long and one short, then it repeats. Tried re-timig it and still the same, no start. Tried putting a small amount of gas right on the chamber and cranking. Still nothing. I've looked online and can get a different ECU for $35 + shipping. Anyone know how much I have to disassemble to get it out? Looks like I might be able to get to it by taking the glovebox loose. I'll be calling tomorrow to find out if the ECU is still available and more than likely get it.

Any other ideas or anyone got an ECU for a 95 Civic DX 1.5L AT?

Re: 95 Civic DX bought with no start

ecu is located under passenger side kick panel. just look at the passenger side kick panel and you should automatically know how to get it off.
