Gas Guage Problems

Bought 1997 over this last weekend took it for a ride seemed ok gas guage read 1/2 full not knowing the guage did not work. The SLEEZBAG that sold me the car did not tell me the guage did not work. This car is for my daughter who registered it monday started to drive it and ran out of gas tuesday. I called the guy and he would not do anything about it. I found out what it will cost to have the dealer fix this about 900$. I wish there was a site to post this sleezes name and address. Also he works for HONDA as a parts manager. I even asked him to buy the part and he said screw you. I would install the part my self. I asked him if the car and everything worked ok and he said yes. I paid 3500$ for the car but I would not have the balls not to tell someone the guage did not work. And let them think it did and drive for 2 days and run out of gas. Daughter is 18 yrs today sept 30. I guess i got to eat the cost and get it fixed. I figured some things to fix but not 900$. She put 15 gals in car wed morning and the guage went to full then started to go down almost to empty does this sound like the sending unit in the tank? Still gonna try to post this persons name some place. This took place in Malden Massachusettes.. Any opinions on the problem with the guage and was this person wrong in not telling me the guage was not working and that my 18 yr old daughter had no clue about this until she ran out of gas!!

thanks

It's a well known problem with Blazers.
Here's a link to a post I put up last year to replace the sensor.
You'll have to remove the fuel tank to do it. Cost for the sensor can be less than $100.00 depending on where you buy it. The Dealer is probably quoting you a new fuel pump assembly - not the level sensor only.
You can get the pump assembly for around $300.00 at any parts store.

Good luck

You may want to search for other topics within this site for "fuel pump assembly"

Re: Gas Guage Problems

You can get off much cheaper buying the part yourself and then having it installed. Probably as much as 200.00-300.00. The fuel sending unit and fuel pump is all in one piece, thus why its so expensive. If you have any questions as to what unit you need reply back and let us know either its 4 door or 2 door.

Also heres a site with some decent prices on the Delphi pumps. These are the same exact pumps your dealer would use, but priced ALOT less.

Re: Gas Guage Problems

Blazer is a 4dr 4x4 . Dealer will sell me the sending unit only for 123$ and the pump and sending all inone for 485$ dealer told me when you take out the pump the hardware might be corroded and you will need the hole thing. so i cant tell what i need till i get it out. Has anyone needed the whole setup or just the sending unit? Also on the site for the pumps what one would i need from them cant seem to find a search for the blazer to see what pump i need.

Just called the place Delphi for the pump whole assembly is about 100$ cheaper but just the sending unit is 125+shipping dealer here is 123$ + tax think i will go for the sending unit only.

Also would anyone trust one unit from a salvage yard?

thanks

Here is a cheap way to fix it, ( i had a 97 blazer with a gas guage problem this spring untill the intake gasket blew and replaced those only to find that the coolant mixed with the oil and clogged the oil pump) anyway, just fill up the tank, and i take it that the car has a tripometer on it?, check how many mile per tank you get (keep a small tank of gas with you the first time so when you do run out) and take a mental note of how many miles you can go on a tank. Now I know that its your daughters car and kids dont seem to pay attention to stuff like that, but its a no cost fix, without any hassle of pulling the gas tank, try it, if you dont mind keeping track of miles!

I would not recommend getting one from a salvage yard as they are very sensitive (thus why yours is going haywire).
