Angry Will the screeching ever stop?

Holy crap.... This problem wont go away... i refuse to think that a $50 altenator belt is really going to make a diffence in my screeching problem, i have tried two different belts, techinically three, previous owner had some weird shit belt on it, Someone suggested i buy the poly cog belt for the altenator, it worked, for 2 days, then BOOM screeching started..... its werid though, only when its cold outside it screeches. So, there is NAPA belt, and POLY COG from advanced that didn't work, the nearest dealership for chrysler told me i should call MITSU. The mitsu guy that is 20 miles away told me that it would be 1-2 week wait for the belt... and $44.69+ tax for the belt... so i called the second closest chrysler dealership which is 22 miles away..... He told me that it would take one week, and it would cost $48.44 + tax......... I seriously think it has to be something other than the belt..... but what? there is belt shavings everywhere, and i dont see anything grinding or dragging on the belt when running...... nothing like starting my car at school next to a 240SX with a front mount on it screeching like a son of a bitch.... I dont even want to try the dressing crap, becuase all i read is that it sucks.... and doesn't do anything.

Re: Will it end?

are the pulleys lined up perfectly? if you have belt shavings everywhere, obviously there is a problem.

Re: Will it end?

Buy som Belt Dressing from the local hardware store and spray it on the belt, the screeching will go away. Screeching is usually caused by the belt being too loose or too dry. Try tightning the pully tensioner the belt is on.

Re: Will it end?

I thought you were not suppose to put belt dressing on serpentine belts?
Matter in fact i believe it says that on the can, not recommended

you never know man, not everyone is perfect. But the fact that you have belt shavings everywhere indicates that it is most likely rubbing somewhere or the pulleys are a tiny bit out of line. if the belt was too loose or tight, that wouldnt cause the belt to be wearing down.

Stock 2g belts are serpentine correct?

I just bought a belt dressing can the other day but didn't spray the actual belt. Only sprayed the turners as they looked pretty dry/rusty.

It somewhat helped the sound (after 5-10 minutes of loud squeeling.), went away for the rest of my drive home wednesday, they came back tonight on my way back from work. It was a pretty cold night though so I don't know if that had something to do with it. But it was louder than previously when I never sprayed anything on it.

Re: Will it end?

DO NOT USE BELT DRESSING!!! it doesn't work for shit, just makes it worse in the long run.

you should just be able to look down the belt with your eye and see if the tensioners are lined up. the ONLY time belts squeal is if there is too much or too little tension, or there is a fluid on the belt. on one of my cars (420a motor) i spilt some anitfreeze on the serpentine belt and the belt squeeled like crazy for about 5-10 minutes and then i cleaned the belt and it squealed for a little bit but went away, so either your problem is too tight or too loose or something is dripping/running onto the belt.

That is a fact. I just went through the Goodyear training course on belts at work, and they say belt companies love for you to use that crap. The belts wear out faster when you use it and you buy more belts. I wouldn't spray it anywhere near a belt.

Which side of the belt is worn? They always ride to the side with the least amount of tension. How many miles are on the pulley? Also, if you can't tell by looking, try a string line to see if the pulleys are lined up correctly.

Without a doubt there's something out of alignment. Put on a belt, start the car and watch to see where it is out of alignment. With the belt off, check to see if everything spins freely. Might be the clutch on the a/c or the bearings in the alt.
