replacement of kickdown cable

I had my 1990 buick century with a 3.3L engine looked at for shifting at high rpm's. The mechanic I took it to adjusted the kickdown cable and said the cable needed to be replaced. It is definitely a lot better than before but its not perfect and you can notice it every once in a while. I got a new cable and thought it was going to be an easy job. I removed the bolt where the cable goes into the transmission and the cable end does not pull out all the way for me to disconnect it. According to the haynes manual it should pull out all the way and you should be able to disconnect from their. I don't know if the manual is wrong, if I am doing something wrong or if that is normal. If anyone has any inputs it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It should be that simple. I replaced the one on my LeSabre when i had it, no problems doing it whatsoever. Best advice is to just keep at it, dont let the thing beat you, it really shouldn't be that hard at all.
