taurus has been in storage, what to do about old gas?
For various reasons, my 96 Taurus has been stored for nearly two years. It's been at least one year since it's been started. We didn't intend to store it, so it's had a full tank of gas all of this time.
Someone suggested to me that the gas may have developed a sediment in the tank that would cause more problems if we try to start it now. Should we drain the tank and possibly replace it, or will it have a filter in place to prevent any damage? |

yes, it has a fuel filter and the tank on the taurus is fairly modern and shouldn't leave a lot of sediment. It should be fine.

Re: taurus has been in storage, what to do about old gas?
Before my Dad gave my son his 89' SHO, it had been sitting in a garage for five years. That old gas ran ok, but it wouldn't pass the smog test until that tank emptied and a fresh filling of new gas was done. I changed the fuel filter after that tank of old gas and broke open the filter. It didn't have any more sediment than a filter with 20,000 miles normally has on it. So I concur, it should be fine.

It doesn't help you but a product like Stabil is definately worth the money.
I would maybe go ahead and put a bottle of it in the tank and drive it. Probably be a good idea to change the fuel filter after you run the tank down Mike

If you don't have pollution laws, burn it up. Newer gas will run better once you use up the tank that's in it and then fill it up with fresh gas. Don't worry about Sta-Bil 'cause it won't reverse the degredation of gas, but will prevent it from degrading if added before you store it (obviously, you couldn't do so when you stored it, you didn't see it coming). I'd say to change your oil to get fresh anti-corrosive oil in it, and just burn the gas up.
