What happened to the 350?

You know, I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and where did the venerable 350 go? Why did GM phase it out instead of updating it as the had done for like 35 years? I know that an updated 350 would essentially be an LS1, but I do prefer cast iron. Either way, GM coulda just droppd an LS1 into their trucks and called it a day. Just thinking out loud I suppose.

Yeah, but it's not a 350... the 350 was, to many chevy enthusaists, as standard as the bowtie in the grille

Re: What happened to the 350?

lol my 73 c-10 has a GOLD bowtie, and the 350 was scrapped for more efficient design. Im not sure if they completely reengineered the block but im assuming they did because the numbers for smallblock stop at 1994

Re: What happened to the 350?

The 350 lives on, just not a factory option anymore. I talked to a guy at the drags last weekend who was running a small block 454. Yup...SMALL block 454 crate motor.

A small block 454 is out there, but it's not a "standard" GM engine... You can read about it here:

Re: What happened to the 350?

No question...nothing standard at all about it, but in terms of a heritage, if you hang around a race track or go to a cruise night, you're surrounded by small blocks

Re: What happened to the 350?

Just think the ZO6 7.0 liter has the same outside dimension as the 5.3 liter..

427 small block in my 02 Sierra

350 was a good engine, but my little 327 would eat them for lunch on the street

Are you talking about the 60's-era 327, or the LS-x based 5.3L? I've seen it in manuals and documents as a 323 and a 325, but never a 327

Actually everything that I have seen lists the 5.3L as a 327 although I did talk to someone today who said that up until '04 they have been 323 but the '04 and '05 are back to 327....don't know personally just my
