93 Tercel Head Bolts

I am having difficulty finding out what the correct tool is for the head bolts on my 93 Tercel. It is a 12 point bolt but i do not know if it is 9mm or 10mm. Also, where can I get the tool to fit this bolt? Not at Napa, Carquest, Autozone . . .

I had to borrow one from a mechanic. Make sure you install new head bolts when your put the head back on. The new head bolts had a regular head on them, I was told that these were better anyway since the old style were prone to breaking. Make sure you follow the directions to the T when torqing them back.

I ordered today an 8mm bihexagon tool from OTC for the head bolts in my 1991 Tercel. This after buying an 8 and 10 mm triple square tool which did not fit. http://inresco.org/valvejobf/valvejob.html <-- shows diagram of triple square vs. bihexagon. Each is 12 point.

The master mechanic at the local Toyota dealer explained these two types of tool configurations and specified that it was 8mm. The part number is 09043-50080 the cost was $11.75 plus tax and shipping.

Re: 93 Tercel Head Bolts

Hello. I had the same problem with my 92 Tercel, 3ee. I went all over town but no one knew what they were. The closest I could find were triple square (12 point) tools from German cars, but they were 8mm (too small) and 10mm (too big).
I tried the OTC numbers but in Canada they are different and most places don't do conversions of stock numbers or so I was told.
I went on ebay and got what I needed for $8 plus shipping. It was a JTC M9 1/2 inch socket tool. Worked like a charm. The seller was in the US. I also ordered head bolts there (the originals are "torque to fail" or manufactured to snap if re-torqued) for 1/3 the price in Canada.
