Hey everybody! Here's my "ugly" Ferrari thread.

I personally find the styling of this Grand Tourer very classy and beautiful. Of course it is quite a bit less forceful a design than most other Ferraris, but then again, isn't that the point?

Plans for this model are a possible wheel swap, or just a repainting of the stock wheels in aluminum. I will be painting the body a medium metallic blue, which will suit the elegant shape very well. I may meddle with the suspension some, depending on how it looks once I get it mocked up. I don't plan on any extensive modifications, just tasteful corrections and additional detail. Here's what I've done so far:

While removing the mold lines from around the window frames, I sanded away most of the panel line there. I rescribed it using the back of a hobby blade:


Next I noticed that the twin front splitters looked far too thick. I thinned them both with a sanding stick. Here you can see the passenger side has been thinned, while the drivers side is still the kit thickness:


Unfortunately, that is all the progress I have for the moment, but more is on the way. I should be recieving a parcel from home containing the bulk of my building supplies early next week. Then I can get started painting and assembling!

On a side note, my current situation is a bit restricting. I have just started my first year of college here at Kansas State University, and I am majoring in Architecture. This means I will not have copious amounts of time available to work on this. That does not mean that you will not get progress, only that it will be slow... er, sorry.

Luckily, since I am in the arch. program, I have access to the university's graphic arts program, including their enormous painting booth, and a very cool device called the Heliodome. It is a edge-less room with a 360-degree lighting system, and controls to replicate any lighting contitions you can imagine. This of course will become my new photography studio...

Anyway, I hope you all like what you see, and will come back when I can show you more!

Can anyone guess what time it is?
It's UPDATE TIME! Yay!

I have put a few coats of paint on this grand machine, but not the color I said I would... I went looking for a nice dark blue, and instead came across this wonderful green:



It's Testors Custom Lacquer System, like on the Jag. This color is GM Fathom Green Metallic. The cap made it look like a super dark british-ey green, but upon spraying it, it turned out to be a bit lighter. I'm not even mad, the true color is amazing. Like the other Testors lacquers I've tried, it laid down smooth with little orange peel. Also like the last color I used, this one seemed to be mostly metal-flake. Like spraying glitter until it starts to flow together and settle out.
Needless to say, I can't wait to clearcoat it and see how it handles a shine.



I also got started on the engine. I planned a few details, like the fuel hoses on the intake manifold (they are the little black and silver things next to the intakie):



You can see the BMF I placed on the cast-in ridges so that after painting I will scrape off the paint to reveal the chrome.

I also started painting (XF16) and washing with thinned down Smoke:



Finally, I stripped the chrome plating off of the wheels, painted them Aluminum, and painted valve-stems and boltheads:



Plans still call for a mostly stock build. Interior will most likely be a reddish-brown two tone.

its a nice car you doing....i personaly dont like the color, i do love it in blue, and rosso corsa red....i havent seen one in yellow yet though.

i will folow this project....thats an nice advantage of your school taken acually

I like the green, with some more clear over it it should come out just purrfect!

Good to see revell decided to tackle the issue of the warped hood, it seems yours is fitting perfectly.

Very nice progress! I have this kit in my to-do pile, and already have the paint for it: Rubino Pearl, a dark red color that should suit this classy chassis quite well. The green is nice too, lathough fathom green is a muscle car color for corvettes and camaros initially.

lookin really good man. I actually like the scagi's. I think they are very nice classy lookin cars. Now ya they are a bit of a different look to come out of the ferrari compound, but nonetheless a very nice lookin easy on the eyes car. And you are doing a great job of this one. All the little details that your adding are gonna look great on the finished product...........*Ryan*

Got some clear on it. Testors Custom Lacquer System High Gloss Clear three coats, sanded with 1500 grit wet-dry, then rubbed out with Novus #2 polish.

I want to make note of Novus polishing products. I have used them before to clean clear parts and buff scratches out of windshields, but I had never tried polishing paint with them. After trying it, I can say that it works just as well as any other brand of polishing compound. Starts out feeling too runny, but then right away you can see the gloss show up. The no. 2 stuff will rub completely away, and leaves a slippery-shiny surface. Try it if you haven't yet!
