Starter Replacement - 2001 GK

Hey I am gearing up to replace a starter on a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - called the parts house and they told me to check with my owners manual before doing the job - I bought the truck used and dont have an owners manual
Anyone have any clue why the parts guy would lead me that direction?
I know there are HUGE issues with the sound system on this beast...but a simple starter swap?

He must have meant SERVICE manual.
The owners manual is very useful, but it won't tell you squat about repairs.
When you disconnect the battery you will lose some settings that need to be re learned, but that's about it.

HUGE issues with the sound system? Other than having to reset your clock and radio presets, there are no huge issues with the sound system...unless you're speaking about some issues with your particular Jeep.

I replaced the starter in my '94 Jeep GC without any problems (I'm not sure if the 2001 is the same). I disconnected the ground on the battery, then the starter came off by pulling out two bolts - really easy from under the vehicle. The issues with radio presets, etc. were no different than what I would face with replacing the battery (since I disconnected power). The owner's manual might talk about these concerns in a section about the battery. As far as the starter, I don't know of special concerns unless you choose to do other diagnostics in order to confirm that the starter is the issue (most troubleshooting guides recommend checking cables, connections, power, etc.). For me, everything else looked fine, and the starter was just old and worn out.

how about banging the starter with a hammer to get it working (stuck starter)

I just replaced the starter on my '01 and it wasn't bad. I just disconnected the ground on the battery, loosened two bolts, and two electrical connections. Really what took me the longest was unplugging one of the electrical connections. It was also a little tricky squeezing the new starter up there but it does fit without removing anything else. I did this last Thursday and have had no problems since. I did use the banging technique on the older starter to get it started and into a garage.

just replaced mine too. One thing I like about jeeps is the ease of repair. There is so much space to work with. Usually I would have to remove other components in order to get to the part I'm trying to remove.
