Re: K1500 Tweaks

Don't waste your money on the Tornado. I never saw any benefit from it (gas mileage or otherwise) and took it out after a few years because I got tired of putting it back whenever I cleaned the air filter. As for tweaks, there are the usual for any V8. K&N air filter, headers (full length better, but the drop in replacement shortys will see a benefit), mufflers (cat back systems), Holley 670 TBI (if you have TBI), new chip (take your pick of those on the market), etc. Without going into the engine, you can improve air flow, fuel flow, exhaust flow and shift points. If you're after gas mileage, go with the chip, air cleaner, headers & exhaust, and pick your tires carefully. All of this is about improving efficiency which will get more torque and some horsepower while improving fuel economy (except for the bigger TBI.) Most of us do this in pieces so as not to drop a ton of money in at once.

Darn good advice. Read this article about the "Tornado" and other gimmicks.

Re: K1500 Tweaks

also, although mileage is lowered a bit, and they are a pain to install, a new cam can help out a LOT when it comes to a street truck. dont get a really lopey one that makes all its power north of 3000rpm because you will loose a good deal of low end torque and will probably be worse off than when you started. get a torque increasing cam, sometimes called an RV cam (they put them in 350s and 454s that are in big motorhomes, for low end power) the engine will also ilde smooth still and will have much more low end power which rules on the street. also, if you are a millionaire, have someone build you a fiberglass truck LOL you can get the whole fiberglass cab for a 73 to 87 chevy for only 5000!! lol

my '91 350 has a "jet stage 2 proformace chip". I got it strait from jet..on their website...it also came with a lower termstat. the price was just over 250.00

how much power increase did you see from that? what about mileage? i dont know much about chips, but 250 bucks sounds like a killer deal. if my truck had tbi instead of a carb i would look into that.

by the way, do the chips affect the longevity of the engine or will it still last to over 150k miles?

Re: K1500 Tweaks

i did not dyno the truck before or after i installed the chip...but as soon as i put in the chip i feelt a differance ....in the way it started and the acceleration....as for gas milage, my odometer dosnt work....the truck has been i my family since we got it off the lot in '91 and it stoped before i got it.......but now i would get a programmer instead of a chip..so i can program more then one truck...and where u install the chip is behind the glove box......
