Tips on painting my own car

Hi, I have absolutely no experience with painting a car. However, I also have no money. And my car is on the way to becoming full of holes because of all the rust. So here's what I've done so far. I completely sanded the roof, removing as much rust as possible, making the roof completely smooth. Then I pur on white primer. Then I ran out of money. I do plan to do the same to the rest of the car, but here is my question. Is it okay to just get spraypaint and spray the car? keep in mind I'm not looking for perfection. I just want my car to have paint on it. Or do I have to get a spray gun and air compressor and all that stuff...which I can't afford? Because somebody told me that if I just try to spray it straight from the can, it's gonna drip and run all over the place. Is this true?

If you just want to cover up the paint, I guess it would work... it'd be hard to sell a car like that later, but if you really don't mind then I'd say do it. I've seen a few cars done with a spray can, they can turn out pretty good if you mask off the appropriate areas correctly. By pretty good I don't mean it even compares to an actual paint job, I mean they were all one color (black), but you could totally tell it was a home job: shinier in some areas, flatter in others.

What about getting that rubberized bedliner spray in a can and doing your car with that... that'd be pretty cool. No more rock chips!

Re: Tips on painting my own car

I've seen several brush paint jobs that looked better than some spray jobs I've seen.
