Please list your observed fuel economy please!!

Hey everyone, I'm considering a 98-01 Tacoma Prerunner with an auto trans. for my daily driver and to haul parts(and maybe the actual car) for my ae86. The ability to tow another car is not my main concern though.. I have a semi-long commute, as I do about 60 miles a day just for work and school.

I've done a search on this site, along with searches on google, edmunds, fueleconomy.gov, and msn carpoint. They all seem to give me somewhat conflicting mileage reports.

It looks like the 98 2.4L 4cyl is much more efficient than the 99+ 2.7's. Does the 2.4's really get that good of gas mileage?
I'm assuming not, but will the 2.4 be able to tow anything?

The 2.7L 4cyl and the 3.4L 6cyl also seem to be VERY close in fuel efficiency.

Please do me a huge favor and post any answers you could have to my questions and also your calculated miles per gallon along with any mods that you have(if any).

Edit: please also list the year, model, and options(such as 4wd, 6cyl, etc).

Thanks,
Felix

PS. do all prerunners come with the TRD package?

Not all Prerunners have the TRD package, but to me it looks like a majority of them do.

I was just checking fueleconomy.gov and can see where you are having conflicting reports on mileage. That site just broke down the trucks to 2wd and 4wd, and doesn't specify prerunner. The basic 2wd pickup should have better gas mileage that the prerunner which should be just slightly better than 4wd.

If you look on the next page, there is a thread titled "Gas Mileage" and 3 of the last 4 posts have some observed mileage and mods. Or here is the link: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=454155

Recently I just got nearly 26mpg on my 2002 2.7L Prerunner TRD with a drive up into the Rockies to see the fall colors. Highway driving above 9,000' sure helps with the mileage. Overall mileage since late June has been just over 23mpg.

I have a 2001 Prerunner Doublecab v6. I am running amsoil synthetics in the tranny, gears, power steering and oil. I have the 31x10.5 BFG AT tires which apear to have a little more rolling mass than the stock tires. I love this truck but am dissapointed with the mpg. Around town commuting 50/50 highway and traffic I get 17 with a light foot. On highway commutes keeping it around 65-70 mph I can get up to 20 mpg but that happens rarely becuase I like to drive faster. The norm for me is about 16-17 mpg.

2000 TRD V-6 auto, 18 mpg, higher in highway, but I do so little highway driving that I've never really calculated the mpg.

I've commute 45 miles on rural roads every day, and I've been driving my wife's Legacy more often than not since Katrina.

I know this is a bit late to reply, but I've got a 1994 Xtra cab (2 wd) with the 2.4L 22RE engine. It has 110k miles on it.

2 weeks ago I drove it from Stillwater, OK to Wichita, KS and back and used a little more than 3/4 of a tank of gas. I did a couple of days of city driving on what was left of the tank, so my mileage isn't all highway. Upon refilling the tank, I calculated my mileage at just under 27 MPG.

No mods, recent home tuneup.

I've not towed anything heavier than a 20 foot sailboat, but had no lack of power for that.

Cool Re: Please list your observed fuel economy please!!

I have a Toyota Tacoma, Double cab, v6 3.4L 4 x4 and get an average of 17 to 18 MPG. My towing package can pull 5400 lbs with the push of my overdrive.

Re: Please list your observed fuel economy please!!

No, not all prerunners have the TRD package. I thought all prerunners had the 2.7 or 3.4, though. I know it is this way on the recent years, but maybe pre '98 you could get them with the 2.4, like you said.

My girlfriend has a regular cab 5 speed 2wd with the 2.4 and gets about 27 mpg. I drive a regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7 and 5 speed and get 23 mpg. Not much difference.

Fuel Mileage

2005 v-6 TRD automatic 2WD and I am getting 21 MPG in rural driving. I have not done a highway trip yet but I do have a cover over the bed and that is claimed to help gas mileage a bit too.

I am using Mobil 1 5W-30 oil and am a bit cautious with gas pedal pressure. I expect it to get better as the engine breaks in more.
