Cold start problem

I have a 99 windstar with the 3.8 liter power plant.
I have a cold start problem; It will not start but you can smell gas after cranking. If you hold the pedal 1/2 way down on the 2nd start it starts and 90% of the time it will hold an idle sometime it will not.
no problem when starting van when it is warmed up.

I had this problem with my 95. We noticed that it was having trouble starting. I was meaning to get around to fixing it and it just cleared up. I have no idea what was causing it. It starts fine now.

I was thinking that it was the cold start circuit. (if that exists on this engine) possible a coolant sensor.

Do you have a check engine or service engine soon light? Even if you don't you may have a stored code. Check for stored codes.

I wonder if the IAC (Idle Air Control) may be sticking in the closed position. Could try removing it....and spraying some Seafoam....or WD-40 in to lubricate the screw threads in there. The IAC is located on top of the upper intake manifold....next to the Throttle body. It controls the air flow into the engine whenever your foot is not on the accelerator.
