newbie with some questions..

hey, i just got a 00 GP GT not to long ago..and though i had problems with the crankshaft positioning sensor already..i love the car i'm glad i didnt settle for anything else.

my questions are i dont plan to do a whole heck of alot to the car..just thinking the K&N air charger intake (think thats the name) and prolly the SLP loudmoth cat back and a high flow cat..

i'm assuming with these mods it would be a good idea to get the reprogrammed pcm? and also..i want to get headers but they are pretty expensive would leaving the stock headers restrict the airflow with the new car back system or anything?

any suggestions or opinions would be great..thanks guys

Re: newbie with some questions..

Considering the problems with K&N oil wrecking MAF sensors, unless you're doing a lot of mods for high RPM, I don't feel the K&N's performance advantage is worth the risk of crapping out a $160+ MAF. Most mods to the exhaust shouldn't require a reprogram, as long as you don't put a straight pipe in, as the PCM needs some back pressure to monitor correctly.

so your saying the K&N isnt that great..so say getting the SLP intake would prolly be better? or atleast safer.. thanks for the help

oh, also..say i get the slp intake. does it just replace the stock air box nicely or are there parts or other things that get in the way or that have to be moved around?

Re: newbie with some questions..

The K&N's work nice, but if you over-oil them (and you admit to being a newbie..no offense) you'll short out your MAF. Also, if you don't maintain them religiously, K&N's will allow small dust particles into the engine that a factory filter won't. The flow rate advantage of the K&N (and all other re-usable filter elements) falls off fast as they get dirty so the real world advantage is less then claimed, unless you maintain them. Most quality cold air intakes bolt to existing brackets, so they are basically bolt-in and should require little or no fabrication.

Re: newbie with some questions..

just out of curiosity, do you know if the oil from the K&N air filter would affect the MAF sensor if the filter were installed in a CAI, like the ones designed by MSP and Wizair?

Re: newbie with some questions..

yes, it will. CAI's eliminate the bends and silencers that factory air boxes have which helps with airflow, but it also gives the oil a straighter shot at the MAF, so oil carefully.
