Griffin Intercoolers?

Hey guys, does anyone have any opinions on Griffin Intercoolers? I was lookin around RRE's site, and those intercoolers seems pretty nice. DSM tuners has some info on them, but not much.

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/intercoolers.htm is the link.

I'm looking at the 24 x 10 x 2.75 side to side flow with the endtanks welded on at the offset position. Only $400. It LOOKS good, but how does it perform? I don't really know how to read RRE's flow charts on the core.

Thanks guys.

Re: Griffin Intercoolers?

Seems decent, my brother (ted-ex) bought an intercooler from ebay and it is amazing quality and was like $250. btw it's 24x12x3. Here's one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HUGE-...QQcmdZViewItem
not the same seller but looks similar. On an intercooler i really don't think there is that much to messs up. I could be wrong, but it's not a mechanical part so i think it would be fine.

Re: Griffin Intercoolers?

Also i was just thinking about this, those top to bottom intercoolers seem really inefficient. The air would take the path of least resistance, so like half maybe less of the intercooler would be used.

Re: Griffin Intercoolers?

Might want to watch that one if you ever plan on running higher boost. It says it's only designed to hold up to 25psi.

Re: Griffin Intercoolers?

Here is the whole thing I don't understand about FMIC's. You can get a core off ebay for about $200 shipped to your door, right? Most people say that you need 3 "U" bends, one piece of straight pipe, 2 or 3 couplers, a couple of worm clamps and a BOV flange. Cut the pipes in the appropriate place, weld on the flange and you are done. I'm sure it's not that easy to install, but you get the gist.

Anyway, everytime I see a complete kit, the damn thing is about $1000. WTF. Are worm clamps and "U" bends that expensive.

If I every fabricate my own pipes, I swear I'm going to start cranking out copies and selling them on ebay for $100 less than everyone else. I'm sure I could make a killing.

By the way, while we are on the subject of FMIC's, does anyone know how bad it would be if you just ran the piping over to where my UICP is now (off the stock SMIC location?

Well, I emailed RRE and they said that that core would be plenty effiecient for an evo3 16g, and that I prolly won't have to take out the stock fog lights.

Seems like a good deal. I'm most likely going to get this core for Chanukah! Wooo

When I installed my jrc intercooler all i needed was a u bend and a 90 degree bend from summit. I used the 90 degree bend to go from the intercooler up to my brode uicp and i only needed to cut like an ninch or two off to make it fit.

To late, its called OBX. I emailed that seller about 3 weeks ago and asked if that 25psi was a mistake. It's not. There are plenty of bar and plate intercoolers that will flow 800-1000cfm with 1.5psi drop for about $200-250 shipped. I was on their like i said a few weeks ago shoping for one.

Ps. Side to Side intercoolers make air pass through more surface area to cool the air. Example 2 and 3 (griffen rre) will provide the best results. Top to Bottem Intercoolers are the best becasue their is less chance of heat soak and are typicaly the most effecent intercoolers with lowest pressure drop. thats why they are more expensive

They have less pressure drop but at what expense? It just sees like the air wouldn't flow through the entire intercooler. Wouldn't that result in less cooling efficiency?
BTW: I made my own intercooler piping from exhaust piping, i welded as many seems as possible and it cost like $50 total (piping only). I think the reason piping kits cost so much is cause they use aluminum piping which for some reason costs more than steel piping (steel cost>aluminum cost, steel pipe cost<aluminum pipe cost )

Will I see any gains, or losses if I put it on right now without upgrading the turbo? I don't want to get it, then have it slower than before putting it on
