Workin on my car day by day...could use some help

Hey everybody,

New to the forums and ive had my 83' 305 camaro z28 for about a month now. I bought it for $2600 - 90,000 miles (needed front end work). Got it tuned up, got the front end fixed up, and got new tires.

The last couple of days ive been workin on it in my garage tryin to do some work myself and use soem homeade parts. Heres a list of what ive done:

- Took off muffler (sounds good & muffler was a rusty piece of junk anyway) Any thoughts on what this may do to perforance or gas mileage?
- Replaced 3 blown speaker
- Added a sub
- Added a new air intake (homemade from plastic piping and vent peices)

I know its kinda lame im trying to make all my own stuff but I dont have the cash to buy good stuff as of right now. Ive been trying to increase the hp. The new air intake i made works good and I had the carb lid flipped to allow more air in but the engine started bogging down when floored at stop signs etc, so i flipped it back over. Now when im driving and I floor it, the engine kicks out sort of for a second or two and then picks up. Any ideas about how to solve this problem???

Any info would be appriciated and if any of you have bulit/used homemade mods please tell me about what you did because ive been looking all over and cant find anything about it.

Thanks

Hey man, you gotta start somewhere, sounds pretty good so far. I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to problems with carbed engines (it is carbed right?), but I'm sure some of the other guys might know something about your problem. Keep up the good work though, and try to get some pics if you're able.

Hey man no shame in doing it yourself.. especially if its Home Depot style.. it just means you saved money by doing stuff other people were too lazy to make.

People all the time on here are trying to build there own stuff.
I almost tried to make a muffler out of wood, but I decided to buy one instead......lol, but really I hope you figure out whats up.
How's it sound without the muffler, loud?

I hear that one, gonna make the homemade ram air for my car. Already got the airboxes gutted, just got to get the a/c ducted or sheetmetal, run them from the clip near the fog lights, and back up into the airbox, ram style (not my idea btw, wish i did think of that one though).

that bogging when you floor it has to do with too much air going into the engine for that split second before the fuel can compensate for that new flow of air... try adjusting your air/fuel ratio, check for vacuum leaks and see if your accelerator pump is stuck

Re: Workin on my car day by day...could use some help

hey thanks alot guys for your comments!

drvngstorm05-> how do you think i should adjust the flow of air in? Mabey put a screen over the end of my homeade air intake. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. An where should I check for vacuum leaks?

bag91> yea its pretty loud but sounds real good like its got an exaust system in it.

Tommorow im gunna cut the end off of one of my tailpipes to straighten it and reatach it to the pipe that used to lead into the muffle. I will post on how this goes.

Still any ideas on homeade/cheap things i can make/do for my car would be awesome.

Since thats a vacuum controlled carb I would start there. With 90k on the car the carb may be due for a rebuild.

Bogging Carbs. Iam a Q-jet fan!

Quadro-bog that is!

Rebuild it or better get a nice professionally rebuilt/ mashined one (well worth the power and gas savings). Because anyway you wont be really knowlegeable to make the carb perform. when rebuilding it dont over tighten srews and dont break things (everything should come off easiely) .Your problem is leacky gaskets and some dirt and crap in the passages (use air to blow all of it out)+ worn booster pump.

Also dont get any perfomance gigantic carbs from anyone unless your engine is built up and all.

Q-jet is a nice carb and efficient too (can be upgrated for perfomance if needed)

well, every carb i've ever worked with has two screws on the front, those can be used to increase or decrease the air/fuel ratio bt adding or taking away fuel. pretty much the only way to do it is to play with them until your car sounds like its running the best... carb's aren't near as accurate as fuel injection so odds are you can't make it perfect... carb's tend to run rich low in the rpms and lean high in the rpms... but you can try to alleviate the bogging...

check for vacuum leaks all all the vacuum hose under the hood... any hose that comes out of the intake manifold, look for cracks or damage... particularly the vacuum hoses off of the carb.
