serpentine belt problem

Ok, not sure what to do here. I had a coolant leak that got coolant on my serpentine belt. I got the leak taken care of (i think), but now my serpentine belt and pullys are sticky with coolant. is there a way to clean the belt and the pullys or should i just take it and get it changed? i dont have a cherry picker so i cant do it myself.

the serpitine belts are easy to change, just get a crowbar, pry bar, or a tire iron and pry the tensioner pully up to remove the tension on the old belt and remove it. when replacing the belt there should be a diagram under the hood, in front of the radiator. it only takes a couple of minutes but do it on a cool engine.

if you need to clean the pulleys first use a good soap like Dawn dish soap, then if they are still greasy or slippery use a solvent like alcohol or mineral spirits.

Re: serpentine belt problem

A light use of dawn and water should get the sticky, no need for a cherry picker here. Dont get to much soap on things, it will make it slick, just rise it well, maybe while the engines running.

Re: serpentine belt problem

unless theres something i dont know about, im pretty sure theres an engine mount smack in the middle of the serpentine assembly. last time i changed it we needed to lift the engine on the one side. please, if im mistaken, let me know.

Yes, you have to remove the engine mount if you want to get the belt off with out cutting it. The just use a breaker bar to release some pressure on the tensioner.

Re: serpentine belt problem

you will also need to re-torque the engine mount bolts when puting it back together. the passenger side upper mount to frame nuts are 49 ft lbs,
and the P.S. upper mount to engine support braket bolts are 96 ft lbs. Which ever you loosen to remove the belt they will need torqued down so they dont rattle loose.
