Opinion on Cobalt

Thinking of buying a new Cobalt and I have read some of the posts here and would like some comments on the car itself and not necessarily a comparison to other vehicles (ie North American versus Japanese etc.)

What was the first year for these cars? What are the "common" problems so far? Are you happy with it? Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Opinion on Cobalt

Good car, fun to drive, good power. Has the normal first model/first year bugs most any new cars have. First year is 2005.

I have an SS/SC, so I wouldnt be able to tell you too many common problems with the base models since they are so different. I have however had the chance to drive a friends LS coupe and it was a very satisfying car to drive. Stock stereo sounds pretty good as well. Go take one for a test drive.

If you want REAL info on Cobalt's then go to www.cobaltss.net.

I have a base model cobalt. I feel that it is an awesome car. Everything about it is good. There aren't all the aftermarket parts yet, but they are starting to come out. I seriously encourage you to look into chevy's big competetor to the import scene.

I love my cobalt. It's a base model. Very base. Only option I got was a spoiler. If you don't mind cranking your own windows (i really dont), it's a blast to drive. I don't have much to compare it to except my old cirrus and mumsie's 03 cavvie, but I think it rocks. Its roomy, built solid, and its quite nicely equipped for a base model. I will definitely upgrade the stereo (already bought subs, amp and box, but it got stolen when my car was broken into. waiting for insurance to replace everything) and I'm trying to raise the money for rims as Ive got cheesy caps right now. Otherwise, it kicks. It's got my recommendation. Chevy totally did good with blowing away the cavvie.

hey, u should spend ur money on something faster, cobalts r nice new cars, but anyone w/ a need for speed buys used, unless they have a bottomless pocket.

Re: Opinion on Cobalt

I test drove a Cobalt SS at the Auto Show in Motion...amazing car. Comfortable interior, gauges are laid out well, car handles amazing, has great power, and a general all around good look, inside and out.

Biggest issue is that you will be able to see absolutely zilch out the quarter windows, as they are small and oddly shaped. Rear window visibility will be limited severely by the SS spoiler, as well!

Look into Saturn Ions as far as driveability issues, they are twins under the skin.

Considering that GM is taking a bath on the Cobalt it is a VERY good car for very little money.

I have a base coupe with the 2.2L 5 speed and the only option I have is speed control. I have autocrossed it a few times (I only have 2500 miles on it I am not ready to spit it out yet) and with the base 2.2 and poorly geared tranny I run within .5 seconds consistently with an Ion Redline that runs with us.

If no one bought any new cars then there wouldnt be any used cars out there to buy now would there?

Some people just like the comfort of a new vehicle and the assurance of a warranty.

Re: Opinion on Cobalt

my friend just bought an 06 ss sc, and i have to say its DAMN IMPRESSIVE. He has taken it to rev limiter once with me in the car, AND a full back seat. I didnt have a stop watch, but 0-100 came quick. The car pulls very hard and the handling is amazing. I have a 3000gt twin turbo and he has riden with me too, and we both agree, when we do finally get to race, it will be a close one.

I would say, if your going to spend the money on something new, this is probably the best thing your going to get for the price. Test drive an SS/SC and an SRT-4, which is probably its closest competitor, before deciding.

Re: Opinion on Cobalt

Thats total bullshit ^^^^. I have seen GM mechanics getting those cars. Its a pretty basic car and not that much can go wrong with them. I would get a supercharged SS defenatly.
