Crankwalk question

I decided to ask since a lot of people here own gst's and gsx. In probably in a week I am gonna have a GSX. ( waiting on guy to bring paperwork). The car is nice, but I have heard a lot from around here about how you can get crankwalk. One guy said that if you put a heavy duty clutch on a stock car you will get crankwalk. other said that only cars with lots of hp get it ??? My major question is does crankwalk occur because of the owners way of driving the car or just because its already defect in the engine and no matter how you drice the car it still occurs. I dont want to buy a car and change the block the next day. I tried to find the FAQ about crankwalk symptoms but i couldnt. Can some one please post the link since I think the GSX may have crankwalk.

Take your own advice. Put it in your signature.

As for the crankwalk question, do a search. That shit is plastered all over this site. Read the FAQ page first at the top of the forum.

Heres a link, because I'm nice. Read it like it's the gospel, it was written by the god of all DSM's *kevin*.

Re: Crankwalk question

3) Crankwalk: There are a number of threads on this site regarding crankwalk (at least 10-15 started by me ). For a detailed explanation and discussion of the common problem with certain models of the 4g63 engine known as "crankwalk," check out this link:
Write-up on CW << Written by Kevin aka 95GSXracer
Essentially, crankwalk is a cute name for thrust bearing failure. This is a vast oversimplification, but bottom line is, you need a new engine!
Another Lengthy write-up on CW << Written by 97GSTspyder

Now, don't close the window and run to your nearest Honda dealership just yet...thrust bearing failure can happen to ANY vehicle. And in all honesty, it only happens to DSM's very rarely. If you choose to buy an Eclipse or Talon, and you shop around well enough to find one that looks to be well-maintained, you can minimize your chances of getting crankwalk. WORST case scenario: the used car you buy has crankwalk, and you have to get a 6-bolt engine put into it for $2000 or so. But, in all likelihood your car will be good to go for many years. I would not recommend buying a DSM without being willing to spend this money if your car gets crankwalk. Allow me to stress again that it is very rare, and the pleasures of owning a DSM far outweigh the risk or even cost of crankwalk, in the rare event that it occurs!

Re: Crankwalk question

yes it is thrust bearing failure due to the fact that the first gen six bolt has 2 oil squirters for sufficient lubrication, the 7 bolt second gen only has one. so the question bout crank walk with the sec gen is not if it happens its when.

uuuuuuuummmmmmmm yes it will happen regaurdless of what u say it is an engineering flaw that can only be corrected by replacing the thrust bearing about every 30000, or have i shop install a second squirter in, so its not inevitable if u do what i stated above. period, and to the guy who started this thread if u jump on it alot you will shorten its life span very fast, my suggestion if u buy it change the bearings when u buy to give u a little piece of mind

Re: Crankwalk question

I wanted to ask I forgot his name ( owns the 2005 EVO) since he said that he crankwalked 3 or 4 motors and he obviously knows what he is talking about. I think there was a poll and you guys wanted to make him a mod ? Is there a way to prevent crankwalk , and whats the easiest way to see if its crankwalking ???? I mean I cant say to the guy , take your engine apart so I can see if its crankwalking and then I will buy the car. I want the car but I hate to see it crankwalk and become another money pit.

well if it has crankwalk already then it wont drive if it does there will be a whole lotta racket comming from the engine, yes the way to help prevent it is what i stated in my last post on this thread, i dont wanna scare u away, i have a gst not stock and i beat on it everyday im just waitin for it to break then i might just give it to _eclipse_ i think thats his handle

Re: Crankwalk question

Play nicely people, i dont want to have to close this innocent thread. I dont want to see anymore bickering back and forth between you two. Take it to private messages.

You dont have to disassemble the entire engine to see if a car is crankwalking either.

Not all Eclipse engines experience crankwalk as the aforementioned poster seems to think though. Although almost all engines do experience some form of it in their lifetime. It just happens to be detrimental to the 4G63 because of how it's designed.
