89 Caprice engine cuts out
Last week my 89 Caprice engine cut out. After an hour of trying whil waiting for AAA it would not start. When the truck arrived it started and cut out. We towed it to Pep Boys and left it there. They tarted it it sveral times without a problem and I collected it. Driving it home it cut out again while going at 30mph. After an hour of waiting for another tow, I got it started again and got it home ( 1/4 mile). I can hear the fuel pump running when the ignition is turned and it has plenty of gas.
Any suggestions where to start looking foir the fault? - I'm not much of a mechanic and any help would be appreciated. Many thanks Marty |

Re: 89 Caprice engine cuts out
On my 89 there is a power junction box located on the passenger side inner fenderwell. Power runs from the battery to there and then off to the fuel pump relay. Sounds like that has worked loose. Check all wires and grounds under hood.

Re: 89 Caprice engine cuts out
Thanks CD, I'll check that out for starters. When you say inner fenderwell do you mean in the engine bay or beneath the pasenger side dash?
Thanks Marty |

Under the hood, engine bay.

My money is on the ECM (electronic control module) under the distributor cap. It screws to the distributor plate under the rotor, costs about $45 and takes maybe a 1/2 hour to install.
They're famous for breaking down when hot, either under power or not starting until it totally cools off for a few hours. Bob |
