1g bov

I think ima go ahead and buy myself a 1g bov and save alot of money, especially when I dont have that much to begin with. I looked online and I found a couple for around $90 new and some used ones on ebay for $40-50. Is there much performance difference between a new and used 1g bov? And what does uncrushed mean? I see on the auctions the seller mentions that the Bov is uncrushed. Also, whats the psi levels of the 1g bov compared to the 2g plastic bov?\

Also, on this picture of the 1g bov upclose, is one of these openings a recirculation valve? I read on the importance of the recirculation back into the intake pipe and I was assumming that the 1g bov was recirculated.

ALso, when buying an intake pipe, if i was to have a recirculation Bov, I would need 2 openings coming out of the intake pipe? I just dont want to screw this up and waste money. Any help would be greatful.

Re: 1g bov

Those look fine. It depends on where you are looking to go with your car but the 2g stock BOV definitely sucks (leaks at around 12 psi). Most people run fine with 1g BOVs. There should be no performance difference between a new and used one. There is just the warm fuzzys from buying new that you are going to get. .

The difference between crushed and uncrushed deals with how much boost is allowed. 1g BOVs leak at a certain point of boost (I don't remember the number, sorry) so people "crush" them to handle higher boost loads before blowing off. It is basically compressing (using a vice or other such device) the housing so that it doesn't open as easily under heavy boost loads. There are FAQs on it if you are going to be running high boost. Most people will tell you that 1g is the way to go if you are on a budget.

You DEFINITELY want an intake that you can recirculate. If you are not upgrading the MAF then you are going to need to make sure that the BOV recircs otherwise you are going to have problems. The problems come from the fact that the MAF+computer is expecting more air than you are getting to the engine because the air that is blowing off out of the system is not being recirced back in. Trust me that you are going to want a recirc-compatable intake. Have you considered just hacking the dump tube from the stock intake? It makes a huge difference in airflow and sound (if that is your thing) I upgraded to a hard intake but I don't notice much difference between the one I have and the hacked dump tube. It's a really easy mod too. There is an faq at VFAQ I believe. If you are on a budget, I say skip upgrading the intake and just hack it.

Re: 1g bov

Sorry for not being more clear. There are 2 parts to hacking the intake and they are both easy and make a big difference. First off, if you take off the intake pipe from the airbox to the turbo, you'll see when you look inside that there is a piece of tubing the sticks in a severly blocks airflow from the BOV dump tube. What you need to do is separate that tube from the intake pipe (its only held on by a black glue material) and cut the dump tube so that there is no more air restriction. I did this before getting the hard pipe and it was really easy and it makes the car sound great. Just mark where you want to cut it, use a saw of some sort and then glue it back into place with the industrial glue of choice. It takes about 45 minutes and depending on what supplies you already have, can be entirely free.

Secondly, for that little extra flow, you can replace the flexible section of the intake with a hard section. I never did this and went straight to a hard intake (unnecessarily I discovered later). Kevin did a great write up on what to do right here:

This second link is a little simpler process but should yield about the same results.

Honestly, if you hack the dump tube and swap the flex section for a hard section, you'll get all the air you need. It would be a waste of money to buy a hard pipe. Looking at your mod list, it would be money better spent replacing your stock airbox. I recommend the K&N FIPK but I know people have had plenty of success with e-bay kits. You are looking to get rid of the box and replace it with a conical filter. It'll make a much bigger difference than going with a hard pipe. If you're strapped for cash though, there are ways to free up some airflow with the stock box. If you are going to get into modding for speed, its more worth it to just buy the conical filter.

Here is a great intake/exhaust resource to check out. There should be links to hacking the airbox.
