The song that takes you back...
This thread is about the ONE song, that takes you back to a moment, or moments in your life that you will never forget.
Mine: Phil Colins - In the Air Tonight From my Freshman year, I was on the Varsity Football team, every Friday we would get out of class early and we were allowed to just chill out for hours and just get ready. We would finally get dressed, and be out on the field stretching and warming up just as the crowds were starting to arrive. 6:15pm... Almost game time. Everyone sat in their lockers, the lights were turned out, the coachs left us alone, no one dared knock on the locker room door. And we would play the same song every Friday night. As soon as we heard that song cut on... The room went silent, everyone focusing on what they have to do, their plays, their blocking assignments, praying to God for a safe game. All around me I would hear my team mates weeping with anticipation, whispering to themselves, and getting ready. Every once in a while someone would stand up and start beating the Hell out of their locker, and sit back down in the same motion. Sometimes I would become so focused that I would somehow manage to bite a nice sized hole in my lip, completely unaware of it until I could taste blood running into my mouth. When the part of the song came "So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been, it's all been a path of lies *heavy drums*" the entire locker room would go absolutely crazy, and now we were ready for the game. Listening to the roar of the crowd as we were ready to exit the locker room, with the music blaring at full volume... It will never be matched. Now, football was something I was never really into. I just played it because I was big, I never really loved it, I never respected it, I was never a Jock. But sitting in that room, feeling the energy, I grew to love every Friday night. I don't think I will ever regain that feeling, and somehow I knew every Friday night, that I would never feel anything like this again. Every time I hear that song, it takes me back... I immediately feel the energy of that locker room, I can smell the sweaty football pads, I can hear my friends, family and team mates, I can taste the blood in my mouth, every single hair on my body stands on end, I can hear the crowd outside going crazy, and I'm right back there... I try not to listen to that song much anymore, I'm afraid I may lose the feeling. I think I'll appreciate it more when I'm older. It's so strange how songs can bring you back, and affect you so much. Anyone else have a song that means this much to them? -Wes

Re: The song that takes you back...
Great story! I played football too. On the way back to school on gameday I would always listen to Disturbed- The Sickness to get pumped. So every time I hear that, I wanna tackle someone. Also AC/DC- Thunderstruck was the first song on the cd they played at the stadium for warmups. So that bring sback great memories of the chill in the air, the crowd, cameraderie.
I have certain songs that remind me of past girlfriends, and that time in my life. Like the entire American Idiot album and AFI's most recent album remind me of my ex Shannon, Trillville- Some Cut reminds me of Jill, Suga Suga and the Flogging Molly album remind me of Mary. Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac always bums me out because it was the first song I listened to the night I dumped Jill. And certain songs remind me of places, like 50 Cent- Just a Lil Bit reminds me of the local hookah bar.

Deftones - Digital Bath
I was driving home from visiting a friend at school at around 3am on a cold winter night. Normally the drive is about an hour and 15 minutes. I made it home in 33 minutes. With the music blasting and the cadaverous wind blowing, I pushed my car, myself and my abilities to the limit. I was never so scared and excited in my life.

Re: The song that takes you back...
Not really specific songs, but certain bands will take me back to certain moments in my life. The Blood Brothers remind me of my crazy nights of teen vandalism. Every Time I Die reminds me of sophomore-junior year summer. Pearl Jam reminds me of freshman year. System of a Down reminds me of middle school. And so on and so on.
And Travis, please don't butcher Incubus lyrics in your sig.

I have a few songs. In 1999 in the age of Napster, and when "I Dissapear" flew over the network, I searched for possibly new Metallica songs, I came across one called "Valley Of Misery", I later found out (within a few weeks) that it was by a band called "Holochaust" from Norway (or something I can't remember), now called "Darcane". Well I loved the song so much I went out finding more of their stuff, I came across a song called "Sad Life Philosophy", and that song became the most depressing song I have ever heard, and to this day, nothing has topped it. The song is about the singers best friend who killed him self (or to that note), the song's lyrics are in his position, and it's really, really deep. I used to listen to that song all the time, and could never get sick of it, still to this day some 6 years later I listen to it and just sit back and I can remember my years as a "n00b" at high school, band camp, and just sitting on my comptuer at 1 in the morning with all the lights off but the computer screen talking to people I've never met on ICQ. This song was so emotional to me at times when ever I got really depressed it cheered me up, and pulled me out of a few frames of mind I'd rather not talk about, but it does mean a lot to me. One song that pisses me off is Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", I love this song so much, but I started listening to it when I was in love with Brony, and now we've broken up every time I listen to it, I am reminded of what was, you know how it is.. It's funny though... Every time I put this song on (the Pulse version) I can remember everything about that relationship in horrific detail, everything we did, every conversation, everywhere we went.. Weird..I can't think of many other songs, "Paranoid" by Sabbath is a good one, it was the mid-late highschool era, my band and I played it at year 10 graduation, every time we play that song it takes us way back. I love that ![]() Some songs to me can take me back to a specific time in my life, or specific places, moments. Every time I hear "not the one" by The Offspring (Smash 1994) I remember playing Hexen on the old computer with that CD in the CD player way back in about 1997, 98. That CD takes me back to 97 when I finished primary school, I had my buddies over and we listened to "Bad Habbit" really loud... That was the last time I saw them. Man... the memorys are really pouring in now, haha. I love listening to songs I loved 5 or more years ago, and just being taken back and reminded of what I've done, where I've been, who I've known... That's powerful shit. |

Re: The song that takes you back...
Simon And Garfunkle - Sound of Silence
When I was 12, my dog was dying of a tumor in his nose. He would constantly bleed from it and we were always cleaning up. For two weeks we tried everything we could. Well, I was in band at the time and we were preparing for a concert and one of the songs we were playin' was Sound of Silence. One day, when in the morning before I went to school, I had to let my dog out and I followed. There he just laid, still bleeding and I just ran to him and held him as he laid dying. I didn't go to school that day. But as I held him, I sang that song over and over again... The next day when I went to school, I came back to a home without him. I killed over and still thinking about the time in such detail today affects me. I had him for 6-7 years. Playing that song at the concert was pretty hard, but I managed. It was worse because that was my first solo too. Aye... Foo Fighters - Everlong/The Temptations - Buttercup Both relate to my swim team in high school. We always used to sing and play Buttercup just because. It was a good song and we loved the oldies. It just simple brings me back to the best times in my life. Varisty Swim...*sigh* As for Everlong. I use that song in everything I did when I needed a pick-me-up. During every swim meet I played it over and over before my actual events. Got me goin' real good and after every other down time in my life, that song always managed to make me smile and see a truth. I think I'm overkilling the song lately...I've been a little off. So I adopted a new song to go along with Everlong and now that I've really listen to it, so sweet. Pardon Me - Incubus. K-ci and Jojo - All My Life Just the song I danced to with the girl I had a crush on for 2 years in elementary. it was the "Welcome to Middle School" dance and I left 2 days later to Italy. JUst good times...

Re: The song that takes you back...
Ash - 1977
The entire album reminds me of fooling around with this big-boobed, gorgeous Swedish girl i went out with back in high school. I cant listen to that album without thinking of her. She lent me the album, i listened to it for a few days at home, liked it, and the next time i saw her, we were messing around in my friend's living room with the CD playing. He walked in on me playing with her boobies...

Anyways, Photograph by Weezer brings me back to the best days of my life...we would roll down Mississippi River boulevard with the windows down, sunroof open, subs thumping, couldn't hear anything but the intoxicating bass and distorted guitar. Picked up a lot of girls that summer, smoked a lot of *illegal stuff*, and pretty much just partied every day. Man, things will never be like that again, unfortunately. I was too young to be responsible and only cared about having the most fun possible.
