Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

I noticed the problem yesterday while driving home.

As I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd, and also from 3rd to 4th, I would briefly hear somewhat of a scratching sound as I disengaged gears.

Driving today I continued to hear it. It wouldn't occur all the time, but it would happen here and there.

Not really sure what it could be. Any suggestions?

Haven't driven the car any differently as of late so I feel sort of lost on this.

Thanks in advance.

Could you be more detailed about this noise...Where does it sound like its comming from. Is it only when you disengage or does it happen when just idling and etc? Do you feel any vibration or anything in the clutch peddle when pushing it in and disengaging?

It sounds like it is coming from the area where the pedals are, but I'll get a definite answer tomorrow when it occurs on my way to work.

It only happens when I disengage, not when idling or any other time.

The sounds begins the second I push the clutch in to disengage and ends when it's actually disengaged. It's a mix between a scratching/grinding-type sound.

The car feels the EXACT same before this started happening, which makes it more difficult to figure out.

I guess I just want to fix whatever it may be before it gets worse.

My starter motor begin making a crackling/scratching noise yesterday also when I turned the car on. But that sound seems to come and go so I doubt they are related. Before yesterday it had not done it in awhile though, which makes me wonder. Got another starter ready to replace anyway so it's all good.

Could the disengaging sound be a sign for a new clutch? It was replaced with a new one right before I bought the car last November from Mitsu., though.

Re: Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

The problem you are describing sounds almost exactly like the one I have. My car makes a scratching/grinding noise when ever I push the clutch pedal in. I can be sitting in neutral and push the pedal in and it makes the noise. It also makes it while im driving. And my problem also seems to come and go but latly it seems like its getting worse. My clutch was just replaced less than 1000 miles ago and I too have not driven any differently and the car drives just like before. I know this doesn't really help you but I posted this a while back and no one really responded.

Re: Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

I could be wrong but it sounds like the linkage from the clutch pedal to the clutch master cylinder. There might be a couple of bushings that support the linkage that are worn out. I hope this helps out.

That might be it. Gonna take it to the shop tomorrow and get a check done.

It didn't occur on my way to work today, but sure did on my way back. Very sporadic.

I listened closely and it sounds like it's coming from the area of the shifter or behind the DIN/temperature gauge area.

I don't know, but it's getting annoying, heh.

Re: Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

Let us know when you figure out what it is. I'm curious too and if that is the same problem that I am having I would also like to get the annoying noise fixed.

Re: Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

Hey, I took my car to my brothers garage the other day and I had the guy that put my new clutch in(less than 3000 miles ago) listen to the noise. He said it could be the throw out bearing or even a bearing in my transmission. Seeings how they just replaced my entire clutch assembly less than 3000 miles ago I am taking my car in next week and they are going to drain the tranny fluid to check for any metal for free. They are then going to check the throw out bearing to see if that is what is causing the noise. They said if that is not the case and the tranny is actually making the noise I will have to pay to get it shipped out to a shop and looked at. My question is...if the throw out bearing is making the noise it won't affect anything right? Just make an annoying noise?

Re: Scratching sound when disengaging clutch

It will not effect anything untill it siezes up. Then you coult start chewing up the clutch fingers. If it is bad, it is a good idea to replace it to prevent further damage. I just read the other post about the starter mahing noise. Is it possible that you have either crank walk or a loose flywheel? That would effect both the clutch problem and the starter problem. Just throwing out ideas.

Well for the sake of myself and GSX Fan, I sure hope it's not a crankwalk problem, heh.

I haven't heard the sound since I last made the post, but I am also thinking that it may be related to the starter problem also.

I went ahead a bought a low mileage flywheel because I'm thinking that it may be the cause...... hopefully.

When I get the funds, I'll just swap the starter and flywheel one-time, and see what happens.

Any updates on your end GSX Fan?
