Question 187K is it worth it to repl transmission

my impala has 187K miles with a good body, tires, and no dents.
At 170K I replaced the intake manifold (previously done at 80K),
Should I replace the original tranny, computer, and axle for $1300.00
or just let it go on Ebay?
Dealer trade will only give me $500 as is. Car still drive but tranny slips once warned-up.
Any insight?

thanks

All depends, would you rather pay $1300 for keeping that car going or selling it for $500 and going car-shopping. Its hard to say how long the motor will go, in good care, you can get 100k more miles without much trouble.

I would just wonder on the condition of the engine overall. That is getting up there in useage. (for the record I just purchased a tranny at 155kish range, car runs almost like new, seats getting a bit worn out now =P)

I work for a private company that has about 7 company cars. They all have over 200k miles. They keep getting the cars fixed instead of replacing them. We have never had a bad trans, well actually we did, we had a program where the drivers that deliver the PCs back, one put oil in the transmission, out side of that, no engines, just the trans. This is my opinion. I owuld get your engine checked out, if you change your oil often, I would say go for the trans. It's much cheaper, even if you do put an engine in also, then buying a new car. Why do you think you need a trans ? for your current engine, how does it run ? any noises, overheating ? what does the oil from it look and smell like ?
When was the last time you had the transmission serviced? fluid filter, maybe an independent trans place that did not have a stake in it , trying to sell you a new car.

I'd first try a trans oil change with the new Max Life ATF. I put this in an old truck that was really slow to pressure up when cold and after a couple hundred miles it actually did make a difference. Also, that does seem like a good price for that work and the car will probably go another 50K miles with no big problems.

If you drive alot of miles per year like me (50k plus) do the tranny the car may go 300k plus because if you buy a new one once you run the milrs up it loses all resale value and this one already has.Although you have to feel that it is not ready to nick and dime u to death with other issues. If it seems that the rest of the car is solid do it.jmo

If you do put in a new transmission, you can always sell the car or trade it in, in a year or so and get the trans money back, plus more than you would get for it now.
