Gaining an R32

Okay, so I've got an opportunity to snag an R32...but it's from Japan. It would be imported to Canada, and then shipped to me in NY. That would mean, no it's not legalized. I feel like there has got to be SOME way to legalize the car. The DOT or whoever else deems it illegal has to have some reason for doing so, and therefore there has to be some way to fix it. Would anybody here happen to know what it would involve. Honestly, the cost isn't any issue, I can take care of that. I know this question has probably been asked before, but I can't find it anywhere.

Re: Gaining an R32

the best thing you can do is to read the stickies. what you are doing currently is illegal, unless the car is being brought in from canada by a registered importer, the car will be illegally imported. and if it is brought in by an RI, they cannot legally release the car onto us streets, as there is (read: WAS) a way to legalize the car, which is in violation of USDOT/NHSTA regulations, and bringing in the car w/o an RI is in violation of US Customs regulations. the skyline cannot be currently legalized, as motorex is no longer doing work on the cars as far as my knowledge. the only way to have a street legal skyline is to buy one from a current owner who got the car from motorex. there are ways to bring a car in illegally, and i know of a few ways...infact we have at least 1 member with an illegal skyline in the united states that frequents this forum now. i must warn you though that it is alot harder to get a car in from canada than just "driving it over."

i know a few details as per what needs to be conformed, aside from what is already public knowledge. the main thing is saftey. the car must be brought up to US crash saftey standards, and the car must pass california emissions (CARB). however, the work has to have been done by a registered importer than has been approved by the aforementioned authorities (NHSTA/USDOT) to do the work, and motorex was the only one approved to do so. so...sorry to burst your bubble, but you cant get a legal skyline. try going illegally.

If a person does bring in a skyline illegally, there is a big chance that they might get cought, so why risk it. I mean its a good car, but there are other good cars here also so, lets just stick with the legal cars until 2007 or whenever the GTR is coming to the states =).

Thumbs up

The Evo MR is an awsome car. I love how its actually lighter then the regular Evo =) Awsome. But there are more awsome cars like the new subaru WRX, I don't really like the style change so much but its still an awsome power muscle.

I know I can get an "awesome car" here, but I don't want an awesome car from here. What's the fun in that. I see EVOs all the time, even more popular is the STi. I don't want those, they're nothing special. If I have to go illegaly to get a skyline, so be it, I don't care. I'm doing it

Re: Gaining an R32

i dont condone going illegally, but ive learned that if people are going to do it, theres nothing you can say that will stop them. the only advice i have is that you better cover all your bases and be super stealth about it. getting caught importing a car illegally comes with a hefty price tag if you are caught (5 years in prison and/or $250k fine).

Re: Gaining an R32

If you go illegal, IMO, it is too much risk to own a skyline. You get caught and everything you've worked for is gone. The skyline is a great car, but it's just that a car.

If I'm correct. If they find you have an Illegal Skyline (or any other imports) they will impound it and crush it, then they will fine you.

If you plan on taking a risk on smuggling a Skyline and you get caught........GOOD BYE SKYLINE, AND GOOD BYE ALL THAT MONEY YOU SPENT ON IT.

Don't get it illegal, it's too much of a risk, there is a 80% chance you will get caught.

the government will first try to auction the car off as export only to another country. if this does not work, the car is then crushed, and you can expect jail time + a fine. its a very high risk, but at the price you can get these cars in illegally, for some its worth it. but like i said, make sure you have your bases covered and you got one hell of a deal on a skyline in the US.
