Exclamation What does this hose do?

can someone tell me what this line does? im guessing it lets air into the head to cool the cam shafts and such...but mines busted...put some duct tape on it and zip ties to hold me long enough to drive to auto zone and do something else about it...but it makes me nervous and is getting fixed today one way or another

Re: What does this hose do?

Positive Crankcase Ventilation ( PCV ) valve. Is the line busted or the valve? Doesn't matter, go to the parts store get a new hose or valve.... problem solved. The PVC system circulates fresh filtered air through the crankcase mixes it with blow-by gasses and sends it through the PCV valve to the intake and finally to the combustion chamber to be burned.

Re: What does this hose do?

You got the description right, I'm just in a mood to ramble suddenly... To elaborate, the PCV is simply a one way valve that allows the intake manifold vacuum to draw a vacuum on the crankcase. That vacuum is to evacuate any unburned hydrocarbons that made it past the piston rings and various other parts into the crankcase, which would normally be at atmospheric pressure.

There is also a vent line going to the intake in most cases. It has two purposes. One is to allow for air to move through the crankcase, or at least the head. With a vacuum pulled on a closed system, there is no flow. Allowing air to enter the system will provide some flow. Another reason it is there is to vent excess crankcase pressure (positive pressure). This is only an issue with high mileage NTs and turbo cars. The PCV valve will close under boost with turbo cars to prevent manifold air from moving into the head/crankcase, so there needs to be another vent.

I usually eliminate this system on race cars, but you need it intact if you want to be legal.

If you never rambled, I don't think I would know anything about my car!

As always, thanks for the education.

That's cool, I wasn't going into too many details to a guy who was fixing his car with duct tape and zip-ties (no offense intended).

Come on now, it's a DSM.

Hell, when you can do all of your beginning mods with items from Home Depot, what's wrong with a little duct tape.

hey no one can make fun of duct take it's just like star wars it have a light and dark side and hold the universe together. And not only that but on a lot of millitary choppers it is used to protect the blades from being sandblasted during flight

Um no.

They use a clear adhesive tape, nicknamed blade tape. It's nothing like duct tape, and it's a real bitch to get off when you have to replace it.
