intake gaskets leak

i have a 1994 cutlass supreme 3.1 intake and heads were done about nov of last year with the felpro orange bead gaskets. now when the engine gets hot it smokes a little and u get a burning smell . so i checked it out and its oil coming from the intake gaskets on the side of the engine ( where its v shaped and u can see the side of the gaskets) and i was just wondering if maybe tightening the bolts would help ? and i didn't know oil would leak from there ? any advice whould be appreciated

Re: intake gaskets leak

You can try to retorque the bolts to see if any of them came loose. If the are all tight you may need to replace the intake gaskets again.

Re: intake gaskets leak

My book says a two step process, initial torque at 15 foot pounds and then 24 foot pounds after the initial torque. If you are checking the torque then I would just check the 24 foot pound number.

Based on what you mentioned in the first post it seems that the seals at the end of the manifold have either not been installed properly or were sealed properly on the ends. If you have to replace them again make sure to seal the ends of the rubber gaskets with the black silicone that comes with the gasket kit.

Re: intake gaskets leak

updated specs are for the new bolts and gaskets that GM now has avialable, but I believe the 94 3.1 is not included in this issiue.

ok its not leaking where the rtv is but ill check it out . so 24 foot pounds for all the bolts , so does the vertical bolts come first ?

if so also let me ask u this just say the bolts arent tight enough do i loosen the horitontal bolts so i can make sure the vertical bolts are tightened first?

Re: intake gaskets leak

Don't actually loosen anything. Remove the phlenum from the top of the intake manifold and start in the center working back and forth across the intake to retighten the bolts. Do this in and X pattern and you should be fine. Unfortunately I don't have a picture to post for you to see the pattern.

Ok one more question i looked in a gm book and i know i said 3.1 and thats whats everyone calls em but arent they really called 3100 (94-97).

Im asking this because the gm book says (3100) 115in in-ibs (9.5 ft pounds)

and 3.1 (288 in Ibs) 24 ft Ibs

Re: intake gaskets leak

The 3.1 designation is just an easy way to say 3100. In cc's 3.1 Liter is equal to 3100 cc's. They are truly the same engine. I don't know why the book states the torque specs that way. I got the information from a Haynes manual that I posted earlier.
