dead delsol

I have a 97 delsol vtec, 5speed, actually, it's my wifes. The car runs great. The problem that we are having is there are times when the car won't start. When she turns the key, nothing happens. I have ruled out the alternator, starter, and clutch pedal switch. I replaced the battery a couple of weeks ago. Any ideas?

Re: dead delsol

I had a similar problem on my old Cavalier, I just pushed the clutch and shifted through the gears (not reverse though) and went back ti first and it would start. It wa weird. Try that maybe? I don't know what caused it, but that is what worked for me.

Re: dead delsol

Check to see if you can hear the fuel pump. Check for spark (maybe a prob with distributor, spark plugs, plug wires).

Re: dead delsol

how did you "rule out" the alternator and starter? How many miles are on the car? I had a DOHC VTEC conk out on me, and I literally just went through and started replacing pieces of the electrical system, since the car had 130k on it, I figured it would be a good idea to replace everything. It turned out being the starter, but I went ahead and got a new alternator and battery while I was at it. Just curious as to how you ruled the other components out..

Well my Cavalier was distributorless, so yeah.

I removed the starter and had it tested. When I said the car wouldn't start, I meant that nothing happens at all. As the key passes through on, the dash indicator lights are unusually dim when the problem occurs. Otherwise, it starts fine. Thanks for all the ideas.

Re: dead delsol

sounds like either your alternator or your battery. Turn the key to the II position (ON) and listen for the fuel pump to engage.. it sounds like a little hum.
