97 Grand Am GT died

Greetings,
This has been a frustrating few months with this car. I have a '97 Grand Am GT with a new motor (read: <5000mi) that was installed after the cam on the old one broke, causing oil pump failure. The engine is the 3.1L v6. The check engine light has been coming on and going off, seeming to coincide with the amount of gas in the car (the light would go off after a fillup). This morning on my way to work, I was making a left-hand turn when the car just died. No noise or anything, the engine just shut off. The oil light came on a split second before the car shut off, so I am not sure if it may have just come on as the car was turning off. I tried cranking it a few times, and it almost seems like the car isn't getting gas. It seems to be "turning over", with a strong start and everything sounds normal, it just does not start. Currently my tank is pretty much full. Any thoughts on what could be going on?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. My first guess would be that you have a bad fuel pump. It use to have enough pressure from a full tank to help push the gas, but it seems now your pump is in too rough of shape to be able to pump with even a full tank. If you're turning over fine, but not getting any gas, I would say fuel pump.

Re: Re: 97 Grand Am GT died

Thank you for the response. Here is what I looked at over the weekend:

Fuel pump is working
Fuel filter is not clogged

Fuel is getting to the engine
Spark plugs are firing
Air filter not clogged
Hasn't "jumped timing"
All fuses look OK

So I am thinking it is a computer problem. Everything else seems to be there that should make the car start. I can't think what else it might be.

Re: 97 Grand Am GT died

Just to let you know, I will now be putting a 3RD engine in this car, the second time due to a broken cam..

Spray carb cleaner in the intake see if it fires, check for pulse at the injectors, look at pcm fuses, check all the engine grounds. Post back if carb cleaner starts it.
