car idles rough

can anyone tell me what i can do to fix this i got a 1991 geo metro when i try to star it up takes me awhile to start it i have to unplug some pat on carb to help it start then plug it back in then will start up but its like it needs a tune up when i give it gas runs good when i drive it runns good also but let it idle runs like shit put another carb still the same changed all kind of stuff still the same anyone had this problem help plz thx

Sounds to me like the engine is wearing out. Do a compression test and post the results. Low compression will cause hard starting, rough idle, and loss of MPG

Check the timing to be +5 BDC, also check and clean the EGR valve, check for a pluged PCV valve.
