dakota takes off w/o me
got a wierd problem. when i'm driving my truck (97 dakota 4cyl.) it accelerates on its own. when i give it some gas it keeps accelerating even when i remove my foot. like cruise control, except i don't have cruise control. i have to engage the clutch to get it back to idle, when i do it revs like i punched the throttle then goes to idle. it doesn't happen in neutral, just when i'm in gear driving, and i only need to give it a little gas for it to take off on its own. awhile back i had a low idle so i adjusted the pin under the throttle up a little and all was good. i also checked the voltage at the tps and it looked good. i got a code 55 from the dash, but after checking the tps i only get a 12 code. my hayes book doesnt say what code 55 is. i think i hear a hissing but i'm not sure. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: dakota takes off w/o me
what your describing sounds like a vacuum leak.

for anyone interested, the problem turned out to be a combo of a bad iac motor and loose bolts on the intake manifold. apparently when i gave it gas, in gear only, the loose manifold open up a vacuum leak, which the computer, iac and tps compensated for, but when the iac motor blew the computer and tps couldnt compensate anymore. fix=new iac motor and new seal and tightening of the intake manifold. fyi
