I have a 93 lumina with the 3.1 and it wants to and does at times stall as yer drivin down the street. I come up with a code 42, but can't seem to find any wiring problems. When it starts toi stall, there is bad combustion in the exhaust, with some good backfires and black smoke. I gave the garage a shot to scope n fix, and they guess at crank somethin selinoid. 200 bucks later its still crappin out. Any Ideas?

Re: dang 93 lumina
um, no, dont listen to that. The 3.1 is a good motor, Code 42 I believe is ignition related. Have you done a tuneup on it lately? Change the plugs and wires. Also look for any wiring that may have gotton hot or shorted to ground near the ignition module. Dont give up on your car that fast.

Re: dang 93 lumina
code 42 usually indicates a bad crank sensor or ignition module or the wiring/circuits leading to them. I would try the CPS first, as they are cheaper than an Ign module, and as long as the old one isn't stuck in the block, easier to change.
