Fuel pump not kicking on

'84 volkswagen rabbit convertible

Fuel pump won't kick on
Tested with jumper cable
It works, kicks right on

Got a new relay
it won't work
traded in the new relay for another new one
still won't work

Any ideas at all?
please help

Maybe its not the pump. Anyway is it only one pump or two of them there? Because it might be the booster that gets gas to the main pump or some other ignition problem.

Check for fuel pressure anyway and the spark . Also the oil pressure sender can cause this on some cars dont know about yours. Doest the pump prime at all, do you hear it run- maybe some wire problems along the way since you tested the pump and it works. Maybe fuel pressure regulator?
