How much air should I put in my tires?

I have size 16 tires. On the side of them, it says 'Max Press(ure) 44 psi. Is this the limit to how much air can be put in them before you start hurting the economy, or the limit that can be put in there before the tires go BOOM?

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

Tires will take ALOT more thatn 44psi to go "boom"...I know of people that have run normal tires on demo derby cars at 90-100psi, and they never went boom. If I was you, I would inflate to the rated tire pressure of 44psi.

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

44psi is the maximum you should ever have that tire inflated to, when i put tires on and they call for 44psi, i put in 39 or 40 lbs, the heat between tire and groung will heat them up slightly, making them have higher pressure, running tires under/over inflated will damage them and overinflated is very dangerous, and running 100 psi on a street tire is not smart or safe; running the tire at its reccomended pressure is the best way to get the maximum surface area on the ground over inflated tires from the front look like a 'u' and under inflated look like a 'n' but just right and the sit _ wich puts the most amount of rubber on the ground at any given time

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

My tires are about 9 months old, and they have about 35 psi. in them. My parents say I shouldn't put any more than that, and that 44 psi. was the max they could hold. (They're not automotive experts, though. :o )
So, it's alright if I inflate them to about 40 psi.?

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

I only run 30psi rear, and 35 front. But that's because I do 80% of my driving off road.

During the winter that'll be droped to 25 front and back for traction reasons

Oh and dmbrisket, that 100psi was just in a demo derby where they are inflated that high so they they don't get blown off the bead.

I guess noone here works at a tire place.
on the door jamb is the recommended psi for your tires. Overinflation to a point is not bad underinflation is what causes 90 percent of tire failures.put them at 40 psi and call it good for all around driving.

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

The rating on the tire is just the max that it should be inflated. Say that a tire was max rated for 40 pounds, it could be used on a vehicle that required 35 pounds, but couldn't be used on a vehicle that requires 45 pounds.

The pressure in the door jam is the pressure you need. That pressure is figured based on the weight and stance of the vehicle, and is the recommended pressure regardless of the tire.

Re: How much air should I put in my tires?

I started out my career replacing tires.

Good rule of thumb: 35psi rated gets filled to 32psi. If they wear more on the outsides, they're underinflated. If they wear more in the middles, they're overinflated.

So... go 32psi inflation if your sidewall says Max out at 35psi. This leaves room for inflation during driving.
