corolla electrical problem... please help!

I'm having problems starting my corolla. It just ticks when i turn the key. The battery is fine and the lights work..... I checked the fuses and one had blown, but when I went to replace it it blew immediatley, even with the car off! Is there anyone who can shed some light on this problem for me?

Re: corolla electrical problem... please help!

is it a quick continuous clicking? or does it click once, and not do anything else? I had a problem with my 91 corolla, where when I turned the key, it would click once, but would not turn. After a little while, or after knocking on my starter a few times, it would start. I'm not sure exactly which of these that we replaced actually fixed it, but heres what all we did on my car....

First off, I would suggest checking your battery connections. I did not have a good connection on my hot battery terminal, that was part of my prob.

Also, my starter was burning up, so we replaced it too (about $80 at autozone) (don't think that was my main prob.)

We also replaced the Ignition Switch (about $25-$30 Autozone) which was a prob for sure. I have yet to replace the ignition cylindar, which is also needed, but the car does fire up now, with a little jiggling up and down of the key in the switch.

Also, if your check engine light is on, also at autozone (my new friends, lol) they will do a free diagnostic check for you, and tell what codes your car is putting out, and what they mean. If you have a jumper wire...any 3-5" piece of wire...you can check them yourself on cars around the same year as mine at least. The Hayne's manuals have instructions for how to do it, and what the codes are.
