99 power steering mess

I had some issues with my 99 taurus loosing its power steering fliud (unk location) and a mechanic looked at it. He did fill it and related that maybe there was air in the line and just added some. Now I find it squirting out the cap overfill all over the engine after a 10 mile drive. Is it the pump? Ive added more and it just ends up on the engine also.

My friends f150 did this( same reservoir style) . The cap on the pump was cracked and would pop open a little. replaced the cap and no more problems. Oh it was also over filled. Not by much , but enough to spill over with the cap on. Check the cap for damage, and make sure its not too full.

I had that same problem with my 99 taurus. It is caused by there being air in the line. The guy at the dealer told me to place a vacuum on the reservoir and turn the steering wheel back and forth to bleed the system. He said it takes about 15 minutes. I tried that and it didn't help in my case. He also said to crank the car up, open the cap, and note the level of the fluid. Then turn the car off and see if the level changes. If it does then there is air in the system. Mine changed.

What I ended up doing in my case was to crank the car and fill the reservoir to the correct level. I then stuck a toothpick in the hole in the cap to keep the fluid from blowing out. Make sure the cap is on correct or the fluid can push it off. After driving around like that for a couple days the system had bled itself. Haven't had any problems since.

I had the same problem, it was the rack and pinion...it costs about 800 to get a new one...good luck
