Rebuilding head/engine.

I'm going to rebuild my talon engine (i "bought an engine from someone on dsmtrader and the never sent it now filing mail-fraud against him) anyway is there a way to check the rings without pulling the pistons? the head is off so i can't do a compression check with oil. Does anyone know how to do this I'd prefer not to rebuild the bottom end because i will probably be selling it soon.
thanks
ez

Re: Rebuilding head/engine.

you should have done a compression test with the motor put together and then a leak down test to tell if there was low compression, where it was coming from. i dont' know if there is any way to check the rings with the head off so you might be s.o.l. but re-building the bottom end isn't that bad anyways...i've done it way more than a few times.

Re: Rebuilding head/engine.

I just wanted a quick fix but i geuss thats not gonna happen considering the valve seals are leaking too. I'm still considering building the engine and putting a bigger turbo in (and keeping the car), I've just got to wait and see how much i get from the accident then i'll make plans.

You can't do a wet compression check with flat top pistons. Most of the oil puddles ontop of the piston giving you the impression of better compression, when infact it's just the reduction in cylinder volume thats adding compression.

You can check for cylinder wear and taperness of the cylinder. That will tell you if it needs machining. If your going to drive it & mod it. Do the $400 machining anyway and start fresh. Just don't take your head to any old machine shop. Find somone who has experience with DSM heads. Unless your just replacing your valve guides and having things cleaned up. Any typed polish, porting, resurfaceing find someone with DSM head design & flow experance.
