Look for the site called Team Chevelle, they have links there and a lot of people who know what's what. You should be able to get direction on decoding your vin number. I know that the older SS Chevelles had a "138" in the vin code.

Pull the bottom part of your back seat out. Sometimes the build sheet was stuck under it at the factory. I've ran across more than a few there.

from 1966-1969 the SS was a body style, as such, it has a VIN designation, as stated, the VIN will start with 138, if it starts with anything other [unless it's a rag top], it's not an SS. also, from '66-'70 the SS only came with a big block.
