1995 Sable- transmission oil

My roommate's Sable is leaking transmission oil. How serious of a problem is this and how do we go about fixing it?

You've probably taken care of this by now - I just joined this board and started searching for Taurus/Sable questions I might be able to answer.

As far as your roommate's leak goes, it gets closer and closer to serious every day depending upon how much fluid is leaking out. A low fluid level will damage the transmission, and that's expensive to fix (probably $1500-$2500 for this car, depending on who does it and what they end up doing).

You need to find the source of the leak and stop it, then refill the fluid to the proper level. The leak could be from the pan underneath (a gasket on the pan), or it could be from a metal line running from the tranny to the radiator (the tranny fluid gets cooled by the radiator). Run the car hot and then pull the tranny dipstick to check the level. This stick it toward the rear (firewall) side of the engine compartment - I think the handle is yellow, but I could be wrong. If the level is low, you might want to pour some fluid in a little at a time. This car takes Dexron/Mercon III fluid.
