My 16 year old son installed a stereo in his 1988 Chevy Caprice Classic, and now his blower fan doesn't work. Therefore, his defroster doesn't work. I'm trying to get a diagram or some info on the wiring to the blower motor, and have had no luck. Any ideas?

Re: Blower fan quit working
Wow, two stereo installs and two electrcial faliures...
Are you and babiarz related? Just kidding. That's just such a coincedence. Does the fan not work at all? Does it work on all but High or anything but High? If it doesn't work at all, take the handle of a screwdriver and whack it good a couple of times with the switch On. It if takes off and starts working, replace the blower. If not, well I'll start digging for the wiring diagrahms and the software to make my scanner work....

Re: Re: Blower fan quit working
No, it doesn't work at all. I'll try whacking it and see if that helps. Thanks for your quick response.

Sometimes the connection on the fan itself gets corroded. look under the hood and there should be a harness type thing that clips onto some connections on the fan itself. I've had some chevys that that was the problem. I took some sandpaper and roughed up the terminals and it worked better, although it could have nothing to do with what is wrong with your car.

After working on it some more, we now have power up to the relay. I am going to try putting in a new relay and see if that helps.

Re: Blower fan quit working
Getting power to the fan itself? If so, then replace the fan IMHO.

Re: Blower fan quit working
Make sure he didnt unplug a relay ar connection under the dash when he put the radio in that happened to me in an 87 Camaro. Naturally I thought the worst but it turned out to be an easy fix.
On another note someone mentioned the blower working on all speeds but high. My 78 Caprice is doing that now. I have already relaced the switch ( 3 times ) and the high speed relay by the blower motor. What causes this? |

Re: Blower fan quit working
I dunno about caprices but the blower motor on my wagon is right out in the open so i would take it out and test it. Hook a battery up to the motor and see if it works.
