Question What do i do with it???

Hey i am new to this forum. I have a 1997 honda civic dx nothing really done to the engine. Body everting shaved and so on.. about a year ago it started smoking and using about 1and a half quarts a week then the clutch (i think) went out and i parked it in storage. I had a mechanic come out and was supposed to get the problem corrected, but he up and left with the motor halfway taken apart. I am wondering if i should try and tear it down and rebuild it or just buy another one??? And if so is it verry hard to replace it?? What does it take ?? and how would i tell if just the clutch is messed up or the tranny is messed up? Anyone in tulss Oklahoma that can come help me LOL??Thanks

as for figuring out whether your clucth or tranny is out, that is something you should of figured out before deciding to take anything apart. change clucth, if its not the clutch then move on from there. cheaper to pick up a used block than to rebuild.

if already apart think of it this way that motor would be a ton of work and money to even make semi worth keeping

its not worth rebuilding get a swap if you just want to get running just get a clutch might as well order a nice flywheel too.

Why do you think the clutch went out?

Did you pay him for any work done? How much? Why did he leave half done?

Do you have any mechanical knowledge what so ever? If not, just save your money and have the car taken to a shop and have them replace the engine with a stock replacement, and replace the clutch at the same time... most likely the transmission is still ok, if the clutch is the problem.
Having the stock engine rebuilt is a waste of time and money when you can just buy a stock replacement for cheaper, or even a performance replacement for cheaper than you could rebuild the stock motor.

Hey sorry about taking so long i was on vacation. I will tell you what the car was doing before i parked it and maybe you can tell what was wrong ( clutch or tranny) I would put it in 1st gear and take off just fine but if i gave it alot of gas it would pop out of 1st back to neutral. Also 2nd and 3rd gear would not go in at all and 5th gear would sometimes go into gear. I have found a motor locally for 550$ with 85000 miles on it and a mechanic that will put it in for 300. Does that sound like a good deal? If not where can i get 1 for cheaper?

Thanks

yea... i would play it safe on yourside and get a motor and tranny... pick up the EX D16y8... a lil more power for about the same price... if you want tooo... anyways... when your tranny pops out of gear it is because your syncronizers are bad... not your clutch... i would just get a new tranny instead of rebuilding, and pick up another engine instead off piecing yours back together... exspecially if you have no exsperience on engines
