01 Civic rear brakes

Doe anyone know if the rear drums on 01 Civic is self adjusting? I am too cheap to go buy a book.

Re: 01 Civic rear brakes

I beleive they are considered self adjusting but still need adjusting by hand as the shoes wear.

All drum brakes are “self adjusting” Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford, etc. And none of them actually work.

I figured as much, being self adjusting...

I haven't taken off the drum yet, but so far I did not see an adjusting hole at the backing plate. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough(?)... I plan to replace the shoes and I know that you are suppose to adjust the parking brake at the time of rear brake service, but I couldn't find any information on adjusting so far. I guess I will just take the drums off and take a look.

Thanks, everyone.

That’s because there isn’t one. In addition to putting crap brakes on there cars auto manufactures also make them hard to work on.

The parking brake works the same way as the normal brakes, it’s just mechanical instead hydraulic. There is no special parking brake adjustment under the drum. You can readjust E-brake cable but you shouldn’t need to. You also probably don’t need to replace shoes, just clean regrease and readjust your brakes. I can try to walk you through it if you need help.

Re: Re: Re: Re: 01 Civic rear brakes

To adjust the parking brake just tight an adjusting nut that is after the the "handle" (parking brake lever).

To adjust it:
1. Raise the rear of the car
2. Remove the console cover
3. Pull the parking brake lever up one click
4. Tighten the adjusting nut until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.

Re: Re: Re: 01 Civic rear brakes

It's simple, remove the drum and adjust roughly 10-15 clicks in most cases. Put drum back on and spin, you want some drag. Repeat if needed.
