Transfer case trouble?

I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe with 215,000 miles on it. It had been running absolutely fine all day. As I was turning on to my street, I heard a loud grinding noise coming from underneath my seat. The problem mainly happens when I'm turning, although it happened once at a stop light. I hit the gas, the grinding noise started, I let off the gas, it went away. I assume it's a problem in the tranfer case or transmission.

A friend of mine mentioned that the 1996 Tahoe's had a problem with the solenoid in the transfer case, and it could be a cheap fix. Anyone ever have any problem like this? Any advice whatsoever would be appreciated. I was getting ready to purchase another car, and I would like to drive this another 3 months or so. Thanks.

re:

Thanks for your advice, this is/could be extremely helpful. I was wondering if this was something that your average schmo like me could handle? I'm not much of any kind of mechanic, but I'm willing to try things. Thanks again.

Re: Transfer case trouble?

Big thanks to 2000CAYukon for replying. Turns out, it was only a snap ring. I was prepared to hear $1,500 or more from my transmission shop, but they're honest and told me the problem, a $65 snap ring. I couldn't believe it. I'm picking her up tonight! 300,000 miles, here we come!
