Fiat 131 Rally Monte Carlo 1980

Hi all,
this is Tamiya's 1/20 kit and I will be doing this one

So it is Walter Rohl's winning car from 1980 Rally Monte Carlo.
I have bought only S27 detail set for this one, everything else will be improvisation (is this spelt right?)
So to start. I always do body first. I have cutted out lower front mesh and two hood air intakes that will be replaced by PE ones.

This was easy job and I wanted to do something else but I just couldn't find anything to cut of
So I applyed first coat of primer.

It was almost good but there were two large sink marks on front fenders so that was putyed as well as few more spots and primed again.
You can still se some imperfections.

Then I did the hoods and droped front one

Here is one with 1/24 Italeri's version of this car

And while the body was drieing I assambeled engine just to see how it looks and painted and weathered it a bit.

That's it for now, this will be very slow project but there is a lot of time so I hope to finish it till dead line.

Nice, honest build-up Sasa. Bad news about the drop (we've all be there eh!?). 1/20 scale - don't see many of these unless they're F1 cars. I already know how good this build is gonna be but the wait is gonna kill me!! Btw, why was there what looks to be silver nail polish on the hood? Fall out with the missus?

it is Tamiya Basic putty thined with MM metalizer thiner and since I put brush that still had some metalic paint on it once in thiner there were some shiny particles in thiner and now they are transferd in putty nice effect isn't it? Oh there was sink mark on that part of hood.

Looking promising, shame about the bonnet.
Will you be adding the steel arch-guard contraptions they show on your ref. pic?
Anyway, after your last few builds, this is sure to be a very nice and tidy model when finished!

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: Fiat 131 1980's Rally Monte Carlo

Great choice of subject Sasa.
I'm surpried the 1/20th Tamiya kit is so much larger than the 1/24th Italeri.

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: Fiat 131 1980's Rally Monte Carlo

Time for a little update, so I started painting the body as usual but obviously because of the bad weather and some other small stupid things paint didn't came out good. First of all it was rough, but not orange peal rough but more like sand paper rough (allthou it was perfectly smooth under the fingers), second thing is that it had smoe kind of mist marks all over (When it was still wet it looked perfect but once dry...nightmare).
I was prepared to strip everything down but I ran out of Tamiya primer and decided to wet sand everything with 2500 grit paper. Once done there was still slight patern on the body but it was mirror smooth, so I crossed my fingers and applied clear coat.
Thank god it worked, it is still not perfectly shiny but once the decals are on there will be few more coats of clear and from my expirience it will end up good.

On other pictures you can see panel lines that are just scribed with Scaleracecars scribers, they are so perfect that no additional washing will be required.

Sorry for dark images, no sunshine here for past 5 days.
Thanks for watching.

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: Fiat 131 1980's Rally Monte Carlo

looks good Sasa.

I'm also surprised just 4/10ths difference in scale makes such a big difference in size at first I thought it was 1/12 next to 1/24

The engine already looks great!

Nice save Sasa, that is looking mighty fine. Panel lines are great too, scribing is the way to go!

Wow, looks just like an old Russian Zhiguli or LADA. (Which I guess were pretty much reworked FIATs anyway.) Takes me back a long time....I used to see GAI and MILITSIA roll around in these things.

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: Fiat 131 1980's Rally Monte Carlo

Do you have any pics of orginal 1980 Monte car? I bough Italeri Kit and S27 decals but I can't find any pictures from this rally. If you can give here any photos.
