Question Check Engine Light On

Have a '95 Tracker AT with Cali Emmissions. The truck started stalling when cold and running awesome when warm. But there was never a light, I took the cluster out, seems someone had removed the bulb. After replacing it the light stays on. Even when turning the key to start it never goes off. When trying to read codes, it doesnt flash.. it stays on. When the vehicle is running, again its on.

any ideas? is the computer toast or am I missing something here?

Thanks for you help

Check Engine Light On UPDATE

more info

I can not get the thing to flash codes by grounding the blue/yellow wire at the test terminal, it just stays lit

also it will not reset, removing the battery ground cable does not help, after I try this, the light stays on after i restart the engine

Re: Check Engine Light On

Earl I am hoping you can give me some advice please.

I own a '95 Geo Tracker (4 wheel drive automatic trans FED emissions).

The check engine light has stayed on for a couple years now. No code is to be found on the ECM. My mechanic feels it is a failure with the ECM. He could not get the light to flash either at the test terminal.

You said your O2 sensor was shorted. How are you able to tell if it is shorted if there was no code on your ECM?

I'm looking for any advice before I consider purchasing a reconditioned ECM to replace mine.

Thank you for any help!

Re: Check Engine Light On

lyndabriggs did you get the light off.
when i bought my 95 tracker the guy put a piece of tape over the light but i knew that if my light was on it would not pass state inspection so i looked it up in a chilton manual and they tell you how to reset the light.

You must of read my posts wrong. The problem WAS solved from help on this forum. I do NOT expect anyone to wait on me hand and foot. This is a forum for us all to help one another. And I appreciate all the help I get! As for taking it to Auto Zone to read codes..... The OBD-2 was not used in the tracker until 1996, Auto Zone is NOT equipped to read OBD-1 (It is a different Data Link Connector (DLC)).... Just for your info, so this may assist in your THREE forums your are a part of.

My bad I had a shitty day and I read your three posts in a row it sounded pretty sarcastic. The Autozone by me in Indiana has an OBD-1 scanner I had to borrow it for my 90 Eclipse a couple of years ago. unless they did away with it to my knowledge they still have it.

Actually maybe it was carquest or Napa.. I remember it was called the Auto Xray or automtive x-ray or something to that nature..

whatever it was Sorry I was such a dick.

Thank you so much for your help (even though my thanks are months overdue!) I didn't have my forums settings to receive email so I had never read your reply until today whilst I was browsing the forum.

I bought a Chilton... !! A must. I took my 95 Tracker to 2 mechanics (including the Chevolet dealer) and they both told me I needed to replace the ECM. Ha! All I had to do was reset the switch (the light goes on at different mileages to remind you to check stuff even if everything is fine).

Was I ever happy to pass smog and get it legally registered!
Thanks again!

Re: Check Engine Light On

easy fix. there is a switch dehind the dash. its a dummy light. my break light has been on for over a year and its stupid so i took the bulb out. pull the tilt cover off reach in a flip the switch no more light and no tearing apart your car. worse case you might have to pull the cluster out.
