SC300 vs 944

Hello all at the AF community. My name is KT and I'm on the verge of buying a car in the next month or so. This would be my second car, I had a little mishap with my first car. Anyways I was wondering whats the opinion of everyone on whether i should get the sc300 5 speed manual or the 944 ( i believe it was non turbo / it didnt mention in the ad if it was turbo or not ). Both fairly good condition but w. high mileage bout in the 90Ks - 100Ks.

What are you looking for in a car? I would say sc300 after having been in both. The porsche didnt really stand out to me

I'd go with the SC300. The base 944s are pretty slow, and expensive to fix and maintain. Really the only reason to buy one is to say "I drive a Porsche".

the maintaining would'nt be too expensive.

Generally speaking, I really like the 944, it handles great and has lots of potential.
And usually, 944 engines are very reliable.
You'd have to watch the timing chain and oil very carefully. If the pre-owner didn't, bad engine damage might follow.
And still, repairs and fixes aren't always easy. You have to remove the front skirt in order to change your airfilter, for example.

But I know nothing about the SC300 unfortunately

Re: SC300 vs 944

Prosche is gonna kill you at the repair shop. Porsches reliability is extremely low and their parts are expensive

Performance wise the Lexus actually has more hp than the 944 with 225 compared to to 208,

the SC300's a late 15's 1/4 car
the Porsche is a high 14s to high 16s depending on the year

But somebody correct me if im wrong, but the SC runs the 2JZ GE motor fgrom the Supra so its definately one you can work on

I gotta say for reliability, comfort, and performance including potential Id suggest the SC300

944's are sick, especially the turbo versions. I'd definitely get the 944, its a rare car.

Re: SC300 vs 944

I saw an 80 year old lady driving a red 944 turbo down a wyoming highway out in the middle of nowhere at like 45 mph. I blasted by her. That thing was beautiful and couldn't have had more than 4 or 5 thousand miles on it. I was very jealous. I would tell you to get the SC300 if you have to buy something with alot of miles on it.

Re: SC300 vs 944

The Lexus SC300 does indeed run the 2JZ-GE motor from the naturally-aspirated Supra. In Japan, it's known as the Toyota Chaser, was offered with the Supra's twin turbo motor (2JZ-GTE), and is a popular top-speed runner on the metropolitan highways. It's got a lot of potential that Lexus chose not to tap in the interest of comfort and conservatism, and it gets my vote.

Nah, in Japan the SC is known as the Soarer and sadly they never offered a 2JZGTE in it from the factory. The turbo Soarers ran a 1JZGTE which I believe is a 2.5 Single (or maybe twin) turbo.

Re: SC300 vs 944

I meant to type Soarer, my bad. The Chaser is Toyota's grand touring sedan, which is powered by a 2JZ-GTE...right? I didn't know that the Soarer never got the 2JZ-GTE, though. If it was a 2.5L turbo engine, it must have been the twin turbo engine from the 3rd gen. Supra 2.5 GT Twin Turbo R. Not a bad motor at all...but no 2JZ-GTE
