snow tires

I just got some studded snows for free and they are P175 65R14's. My car says that it can take 185's and 195's but these tires were on a VW just like it. Would they be better than all-seasons even if they are smaller? Will I need different rims for them? I also would like someone to tell me how much better the snows would be and if they would be worth it even if they are a bit small. Thanks in advance, Zak. A.K.A. Zeek

One part I didn't notice was that the ones on my car are 60R14s and the snows are 65R14s.

65R14s might work for you, you'll need to evaluate the wheel well clearance.

The tire numbers tell you how tall, wide, round and type of tire.

Also check with your state laws, we aren't allowed to use studded snow tires on the road here.

Snow tires

They should fit under the car fine.

The overall diameter of the 175/65 is 23 inches, tire width 6.9 in
185/60 measure 22.8 inches and 7.3 in respectively (Thank you tirerack.com)

They are very close in diameter and the 175 are a bit narrower. They should fit under the car no problem.

As far as grip, generally speaking a narrower thire will be better in the snow, as it won't ride on top of the snow. Think the opposite of sand, we use wide tires to stay on top v sinking in. Studded Snows should blow away any all season tire.

You will notice the dry road handling will be worse, the tires will give much more in the corner, making the car feel spongy. Take it easy until you get used to them.

I have a 1991 16V GLI that I changed from 185/50R15 to 185/60R14 and mounted bridgestone blizzaks on all 4 corners. It will give my 4x4 Jeep a run for its money in snow, as long as the snow is less than 4 inches or so. The Jetta tend to get belly hung
