96 Bonny starter replacement?

Hey all, new to forum and hope to learn a thing or 2! First question is how do I get the starter out of my 96 Bonny? It looks like the crossmember is right in the way, and I can only see one of the starter bolts. Can anyone walk me through the replacement process? I would appreciate any and all help!!

Oldbonny, haven't been here on the Bonneville forum for a while, just noticed your posts. How did you finally get the starter out? Sorry you didn't get any replies. Seems like a few veterans would have chimed in.

Mark, there were a couple plastic shields in the way, the first one was pretty easy to figure out, but I coudn't figure out how to get the second one out. Turns out that the only bolt holding the second one on was so buried that I had to find it by feel. Took me a while, but finally got it. Once the shields are out of the way it's just a matter of unbolting and wiggling the starter out!

I just replaced the starter on my 98 SLE, and I managed to get that plastic shield off but not without breaking it first. Even with all three bolts off (two on the plastic shield that's adjacent to the transmission fluid pan and the one 'buried' bolt that holds the one plastic shield in place over the actual starter), that little plastic piece is pretty tricky to wiggle off. The new starter doesn't sound right when the car now starts (starting the car is still intermittent...I think it's an ignition switch related problem; the old starter turned out to be just fine) and there was a warning from the aftermarket starter manufacturer that said to shim up the starter. Does anyone have a clue as to where these shims may go and where i can go about finding the right shims?
