CPS R & R on 89 2.8L
Hi all,
I was finally able to join!  I have been checking out all the posts and haven't found the answer to my question yet. I have an 89 GP with the 2.8 liter engine. I want to change the CPS and can't locate it on the engine.  I have a chilton's book and they say it is on the rear of the engine at about mid-point. I am wondering if anyone has changed this part and how did you do it? I am at a loss here.  Looks like I might be able to get to it from underneath, but not sure.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!Mark Update: Finally was able to get the car jacked up and got underneath it. Found the CPS on the block. Now I need the time to get back underneath to see about getting it out. Sure looks like a lot of work to do this. Does not look fun to do..... I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to get to it.....

It is located on the side of the block and is held in by one bolt. It is not round but lies almost flush with the block. Remove the bolt and remove the sensor. The book I have also does not give an exact location.

It's in the rear of the block, just above the oil pan rail, slightly towards the passenger side. BE VERY careful removing the old sensor, as the o-ring gets stuck in the block and can be very difficult to get out. If you break it off in the block, you're going to have to take the rear exhaust manifold off to get to it.

Hi All,
Well, I finally had some time tonight to try and get the CPS replaced. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be! I got my hand up there and after I found that an 8mm socket worked, I got the bolt out. I then "sweet talked" it out. (Instead of the usual "blue air" surrounding the car!) Anyway, got the new one in and had to clean up a little - then the test.......... Inserted the ignition key and cranked her over and - WAL-LA - she started!!! Now I have to put the other parts back on and I can finally drive her again...... Thanks for everyones help, especialy GMMerlin, who told me exactly how to do this. I really appreciate his exactness (is that a word?) in how to do this. Mark
